Evangelion origins chapter one: Hope
[Deep space
A man seated atop a great golden throne floats though the blackness of space nearing the blue world of earth. His appearance was of a kingly sort his frame concealed beneath a great golden suit of armour, his green eyes shone from within the paladin's helmet as he began to speak.
"God. How does one define God? If you define God as all knowing and all powerful then no that is not God. At least not in the case of the blood soaked lifeless world known as earth, a place where an event called Third Impact has recently occurred. The God of this world is best defined as she who is always with her children or in this case child, Shinji Ikari. For those of you in politics let me spell it out Yui is God, yes it's a cliché and honestly I have come to expect a bit more from the man at the desk but I digress. After all you're here to see a story about Shinji not hear me prattle on so take a look at Toyko-3, I'll be here later on if you need an explanation"
[Within the LCL sea
Yui smiled at her son. "Rei was right you know. This world is. Was full of sadness and now that they understand the AT field they may return anytime or in any form they desire and without someone to protect the new world it will become as corrupted by sadness as this one. Do you really wish to go a place that is doomed?" she asked her son gently.
Shinji smiled slightly. "Yes the people are going to come back one way or another and you're right mother without someone to protect it this world will be destroyed by people like father and Keel, those unable to accept the world as it is. So I will be the one to protect it from them."
Yui's eyes sparkled. "Would you really be their hope?"
Shinji laughed. "I was the world's hope. The reason its gone now is because I didn't understand that, didn't want that. I was selfish and confused. I believed myself to be powerless; ironically I was powerless only because I believed it. I understand now what humanity. What I am capable of and although it will separate me from everyone else I am confident that most will return seeking something greater then simple Eden and when that happens I would like them to have a just world to return to, not a perfect one but one that is just and fair."
"Even if having the kind of power needed to do it would make your heart ache" Yui asked sadly.
"I failed those who cared about me, who depended on me my heart could not feel any greater pain. And this time I shall become the world's hope not because a sense of obligation but because I want to" Shinji responded quietly.
"Even if you become the people's hope not everyone will comeback you know" Yui spoke as a statement of fact.
"True. But does that give me the right to let those who would return suffer? Personally I don't think so" Shinji replied almost at the level of a whisper.
Yui nodded smiling. "Good. I'm glad your resolve is so strong"
Shinji nodded. "Will I see you again mother?" he asked quietly.
"Yes although it may be sometime until then" Yui smiled as she faded from Shinji's view leaving him alone until he to faded from the nothingness around himself appearing on the shore of the red sea. It was cold; the sun was just starting to rise on the ruins of a place he once called home.
'The last son of a dead world and the new hope of this one' he thought as he began moving toward the ruins.
To be continued.
