Author's Note: This is my first X-Files ficlet. Once I get more comfortable with the characters, the stories will get longer. I'm working up to something. For the 12stories challenge on LiveJournal.
Who was Fox Mulder? It was a question that he frequently found himself asking, more so recently and especially now. His career as an FBI agent was over. He was on the run from, well he wasn't exactly sure, but he was on the run. His three closest friends were dead. Everything he knew had changed.
Everything except one. He glanced over at the sleeping form of Dana Scully lying next to him. His one constant for nearly a decade, his conscience, his voice of reason, his partner in every sense of the word. She'd stuck with him through the worst of times. She'd given up her career for his cause, now her cause. She'd bore his child. Thoughts of them had kept him going while he was imprisoned.
Once his only driving force had been to find out what had happened to his sister. He now knew the truth and he knew that Samantha was at peace. In his search for her, he had stumbled across the FBI's x files. His obsession with them had caused the director to assign Dana Scully to essentially spy on him. They hadn't counted on her being open minded and objective enough to want to keep the work going.
He shook his head wondering what the future would hold for them. With the x files closed for good, their best outlet for exposing the conspiracy was dead. But it wasn't their only outlet and they had made a commitment to find a way to resist the alien colonization and save humanity.
So who was Fox Mulder? Just a man, he supposed. One with a job to do.
