a crown of wilted flowers
[one]
They hardly talk about the future.
(mostly because it's too hard)
Day after day, the travel the universe in search of somewhere they can belong for a moment. And sometimes they do, but most of the times, a city is burning in corruption and confusion and it is their obligation to fix it somehow. When they do find those rare places, they treat it like glass and try not to let it shatter. (because they'll both disappear if they do) They'll lie on the ground and laugh at the clouds. He'll weave flower crowns for her and place them on her hair, she'll giggle as they slowly undo themselves and fall onto the grass.
Sometimes (only sometimes) he'll sneak a peck upon her cheek, but he is usually too squeamish to do that. She'll only smile because in the back of her mind, she knows that darkness will tear them apart.
It's one hundred percent guaranteed.

"Doctor?"
"Yes, Clara?"
"I need to tell you that I lo — love the way that you're wearing your bow tie today."
.
[three]
When the Doctor finally changes, Clara cries.
(but not in front of him)
Her face as she watches that damn bow tie to the ground is broken. All she can think about is how she always made fun of that silly piece of fabric. Clara never imagined how much it would hurt when he would let it go. When he wasn't looking, she tucked the blue speckled thing into her cardigan like nothing had happened. She tries to get used to the new Doctor, but she keeps imagining her young one in her dreams. He'll try to impress her with his intelligence and all she can do is smile.
The bow tie keeps her afloat.

"Clara?"
"Yes, Doctor?"
"Have I ever told you that I lo — love the planet with a million ice cream shops? We should go there sometime."

[five]
When Clara finally leaves, the Doctor cries.
It takes him exactly twenty-two days, seven hours, and twelve minutes to find the bow tie.
He slowly puts it back around his neck just for her.
