The Path Before Her, All Laid Out

Kahoko had never thought of her relationship with Len like that before. In all the time that she had known him, she had only ever thought of Len as a very good friend: never as a potential lover or as someone who she would spend the rest of her life with, just a very good friend.

And then, suddenly, he wasn't just a very good friend.

Suddenly, he was the focus of all her attention.

She thought of him constantly, wondered what he was doing whilst she was doodling in the corner of the page of her exercise book. She wondered, halfway through a rather important Maths lesson, if he was also having a rather important Maths lesson too. During lunch breaks, when she would go up to the roof and eat lunch by herself, she would think of the times they had, by chance, met there and what had happened when they had. Then she would fantasise about what she could do if they ever met again, here on the rooftop (their rooftop), purely by chance.

It was disturbing, she thought, to have her thoughts overtaken like he was taking over hers. It had never happened before – not with boys; it only happened with pretty things, sparkly things, interesting things – and she wondered if this sudden fascination with Tsukimori-kun would just flutter on by, like all her previous fancies.

What scared her even more, however, was the idea of not wanting to let this feeling go – to hold and on see where it took her.
