A/N: Whewt! my first story on fanfiction! It isn't very long. I didn't really know what genre to put this under. I'll talk more later. Enjoy!

A very young boy and his shaggy brown yak wandered through an endless world of white and grey. Delicate flakes floated gently down to Earth, settling on their shoulders. It was a silent world, disturbed only by the presence of life.

Suddenly, the boy named Ivan stopped at the sight of a patch of color glowing just beneath a thin layer of snow. He dug into the cold, fluffy substance to find a sunflower, petals crumpled up and stem ripped. Carefully handling the damaged flower as if it were a wounded dove, he turned to his shaggy beast of a friend.

"Who…" Ivan started, voice trembling full of an innocent, childish concern, "Who left this sunflower here?"

The very thought of someone forsaking such a flower in that desolate land of snow and silence was too much for the young child to bear, and his eyes grew wet with tears. He buried his into the warm coat of fur worn by his friend. The beast in turn grunted softly as if whispering words of comfort to the child.

Eventually, Ivan emerged from the shallow cave in his yak's wall of fur, still clutching the lost sunflower. He wiped his tears away with a ratty sleeve that was much too big for him. Nodding to his animal friend, they resumed their steady pace.

Ivan peered down at the flower held in his tiny hands. "Don't worry; someday I'll take you to a place where we'll be surrounded by friends, where the sun will always shine, where we'll be happy!" The grubby boy looked around him. There was no sunshine glimmering through the blanket of clouds, not even in the distance, not even faintly. The only thing he saw was a cold, cruel, empty world.

A/N: Told you it was short. Anyway, I guess I should tell you guys the reason for this. It was Mother's Day, and we happened to be celebrating the 1st birthday of one of my cousin's children. It was by this lake, and we were skipping stones. One of the younger children found this rose on the ground. She picked it up and said "Who left this rose here?" with a distressed face. It was aborable. Looking back on it a few minutes later, I thought of Chibi Russia and sunflowers. So I drew a picture. Then I thought of writing a little story (this one) to go with that picture.
