Chapter 1

Day 1

"Axel," Saix spoke seriously, "it is your job to take the new recruit on his first mission. He's important to us."

"Yeah, yeah, I know," he replied, "where is he?"

A blonde boy with the deepest ocean blue eyes Axel had ever seen walked into the room. He looked around with tired, empty eyes then walked toward the red head.

"Axel, Roxas. Roxas, Axel."

Axel put his hands on his thighs and leaned toward Roxas, trying to make eye contact with him.

"Hey, pleasure to meet you. I'm Axel. Got it memorized?" In return he said nothing. Axel sighed and summoned a dark corridor. "Let's go."

They arrived in Twilight Town. Roxas looked up at the tall buildings, taking it all in. "Our mission is simple. You're to take out heartless. I'm just here to babysit." They walked to the train station. Along the way Axel watched Roxas collect numerous hearts and he smiled in approval. Maybe the new kid wasn't so bad.

When they arrived at the station Roxas looked worn out so Axel summoned a corridor. "Not too bad zombie. Go on back to the castle. I have other business."

Without so much as a goodbye Roxas immediately walked through the corridor. Axel crossed his arms and watched the blonde walk away before finally leaving himself.

Day 6

"Good job, Roxas. Let's return to the castle."

"Axel..." His voice was barely a whisper.

"What! You finally talked! At least you've got my name memorized." He ruffled Roxas' hair and smirked with pleasure. Roxas looked down at his feet without replying. "C'mon. I'll show you the icing on the cake."

Axel took him up to the clock tower above the train station. They could see the entire city and had the perfect view of the sunset. Axel leaned over and handed Roxas an ice cream stick. "It's sea-salt ice cream. Sweet yet salty. Got it memorized?" Roxas took a rather large bite. "Sweet yet salty. I got it. Ugh! My head feels frozen."

Axel started to laugh. The sound seemed surprisingly sweet to Roxas. He explained what a brain freeze is and Roxas, for the first time, smiled. Axel's face lit up in response.

Day 15

"Today you'll be partnered with Xigbar."

"But... I want to be partnered with Axel. He's the only one I've been partnered with thus far."

"You don't get to choose." Demyx snickered as he walked by. Axel shot him a dirty look from across the room. Saix looked at Roxas with cold indifference.

"Your partner is Xigbar."

Axel came up from behind and playfully slapped Roxas' shoulder. "Don't worry about it Rox! We'll be partnered together again." Roxas was more then disappointed but left with Xigbar anyway.

They were standing outside of Beasts Castle, preparing to leave, when Xigbar turned to him.

"It seems like you and Axel are close."

"I guess so. He's the only one that talks to me. The only one that pays any attention to me for that matter."

"We don't have hearts. Don't try to get close to someone. Especially when you're just a tool. One that's not even suppose to exist."

"What do you me-" He was cut off as Xigbar walked through a dark corridor.

That evening Roxas had sea-salt ice cream alone.

Day 16

"Now that you've met all the oranization members, what do you think? Do you like them?"

They were watching the sunset again. Axel looked Roxas' way. Curiousity covered his face. Emerald eyes locked onto deep ocean ones.

"None of them are as kind or outgoing as you Axel." He flushed a light pink and Axel failed to surpress a smile.

"Do you know what a friend is?"

"No. Will you explain?"

"Of course. Friends are people that share a bond. They care about and trust eachother. They enjoy their time together."

"We don't have hearts so can we still have friends? "

"I consider you my friend."
