Harry Talks to Teddy about his Parents
Seven-year-old Teddy Lupin quietly crept up the stairs that led to the door of his godfather's study with a battered stuffed wolf clutched in his hands. He went to the door of the study and tentatively knocked.
"Come in." his godfather's voice said from inside.
"Teddy," Harry said as Teddy peeked in through the now open door. "How are you doing today?"
"I'm okay. Can I ask you a question Harry?"
"Of course you can. What's on your mind?"
Teddy took a deep breath and said, "Can you tell me about my parents?" Harry stopped filling out the paper work that he had been working on when Teddy had entered the room.
"Sit down please Teddy." Harry stood up and gestured to the comfy couch in the corner of the room and sat beside him. As Harry put his arm around him, he asked, "what would you like to know?"
"Everything that you can tell me. I know that my dad was one of your dad's best friends when they were young, and he was a werewolf, but a nice one. I also know that my mom was a really clumsy auror, and a metamorphmagus, like me. But I want to know more."
"Well," Harry said as he thought about what he should say. "Your dad was one of the kindest people I've ever had the pleasure to meet. He was very self-deprecating because of his 'furry little problem' as my dad and Sirius put it, even though everyone that knew him knew that there was no reason that he should be so hard on himself. He taught me how to cast a Patronus charm, and was the best Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher I ever had. He always tried to do what he thought was right, even if it wasn't what he wanted or what others thought was the best choice.
Now, your mum I don't know that much about. I didn't know her for very long and even after we met, I didn't see or talk to her very often. But I do know that she tried to find the very best in people, especially your dad. She spent a lot of time convincing him that he was worthy of being as loved as he was. That he wasn't the monster that he thought he was. She tripped over everything, even if it wasn't necessarily in her path. She loved making others laugh. She would use her abilities to change her face in order to make others laugh simply because they needed to. She fought for what she cared for, which is why she fought in the Battle of Hogwarts. She knew that in order to give you the best life she could, she had to fight."
Teddy listened attentively. When Harry was finished, he looked down and quietly said, "Would they be proud of me?"
Harry looked surprised at the question and firmly, but kindly, said, "Yes. They would be proud of the kind person that you have become. You have become a big brother to James and Albus, even though you don't live with them most of the time. You help others around you when you sense they need help. They would be very proud of you. Don't ever forget that."
Teddy nodded and got up from the couch, thinking about what Harry had said. "Thank you, Harry."
"You're welcome, Teddy. And remember, you can come to me whenever you have questions." Harry watched Teddy leave the room and after he closed the door, he pulled out an old photo album that he had shown Teddy many times in the past. He opened to a photograph that showed Remus and Tonks holding a baby Teddy, smiling and waving at the camera.
"Oh, Remus. I wish you could see him now." Harry sighed and closed the album so he could attempt to finish his paperwork. However, all of his thoughts were on the parents that the little boy had lost, but the family he had gained, and how lucky he was to find them so early in life.
