Canada and England stood in the basement of Canada's House. They were in the middle of a chalk array with a knife, an old quill and a piece of parchment.

"Are you sure that you want to do this?"

"Yes. I want to help."

"You know the ramifications of this venture?"

"I do."

"That you will be invisible to the living nations, wiped from memory until those you ally with need your help, and that you will be unable to raise your voice above a whisper unless in a violent situation?"

"I know."

"Very well, Matthew Williams, Canada. When you sign this paper you have resigned yourself to being your allies' ghost. For what it's worth, and probably for the last time, I'm proud of you my son."

Canada didn't reply. He grabbed the knife and broke the skin on the outside of his wrist. He set down the tool, blood dripping from the cut as he picked up the quill and used the wound as an inkwell. England held the paper flat as his son signed it and then placed it in the middle of the circle before he left the array. Canada looked at him and said, "Good bye father, tell Papa and my brother that I love them."

England lit the candles before he started his chant. The circle started to glow an eerie red and the contract paper burst into flames. The tall, proud nation still in the circle seemed to wilt as his shoulders hunched in an unassuming way, his head tilted down, his golden-blond hair grew lighter, as did his skin. The chanting stopped and the basement was submerged into darkness.

"Where the bloody hell am I?"

"Y-your-"

"Hello? Is anyone actually here?"

Finding a candle England lit it and began to look around the room before he caught sight of the stairs. He never noticed the smudged array nor the blonde he knocked over onto the floor. As the older nation walked up the stairs he touched his face, "Why am I crying?"

A/N. This was just a rough idea that wouldn't go away. I'm not sure it's any good, but I thought it might be worth something. The time-frame of this is unclear on purpose, and if you noticed I put in a hint as to why Prussia can see him. Any constructive criticism is good, grammar and spelling nazis are welcome. Thank you for reading!
