The lady walked into the hospital. She had spent so many years here growing up. It felt like a second home back then but now it felt like a prison. She was here everyday and nothing had changed. She entered the room that was now so familiar.
"How s she," the girl asked the doctor.
"She is awake. And she's asking for you today."
The ladies face fell. "You would think that I would live for days that she asked for me, but then I have to explain it to her again."
"You know you can always go home. You don't have to do it."
"How do you do this, Chris?"
"I don't really. I go home and live in my old photos. It is so hard."
The lady grabbed Chris's hand. Tears she had been holding back came flooding out. It had been along time since she had allowed t. But why not break down in front of someone who was practically family. Chris did something way out of her character. She pulled the lady into a hug and held her tight.
"She knew this was coming. Way before you were born it was a possibility she worried about. But you were more important."
I nodded wiping away the tears. "I best get in there and see her before she is gone again."
I slipped in the closed door. I grabbed her hand like I always did.
"How is the doctrites degree going, honey."
"Mom it is wonderful." I said lying. I had finished it a year ago.
"Good, I always knew you were smart like Derek. Where is he anyways?"
I couldn't bring myself to remind her that he had died years ago. How could you tell someone that again and again? It broke her heart every time. So I forced a fake smile. "Mom he is in a surgery right now. He will be done tonight. Maybe he'll make it in tomorrow."
Her faced creased. "He is supposed to be taking you to school tomorrow. He has to come. I have so much work to do. You know I love you Sidney."
"Mom, I am 25 now. I don't need a ride school."
There was a knock at the door. I turned to see who was there. I saw my sister Zola there. My moms face light up.
"Hey mom, can I come in?"
She looked at me with unsureness in her eyes. "Yah I think that the nurse is done," looking right at me' "Nurse are you done so I can visit with my daughter?"
I nodded. I had to get out of there before the tears fell.
After a while Zola came out and hugged me. "I am so sorry. I know it is hard."
I forced a smile. " I was just glad I was her daughter for ten minutes. She knew I was getting my doctorate and that is enough. How could I ask for more?"
"I am looking for a cure. I wont give up. I am incorporating mom and dads research. I have a grant…"
I hugged her. "If anyone can do it, Zola, it is you. The daughter of Derek and Merideth."
I had to edit the name of the girl in my story. to clarify, sidney is derek and merideths second daughter
