After John had sacrificed himself for Elena, Jeremy handed Elena the letter John left, as well as John's ring. Jeremy walked out of Elena's bedroom, and Elena was at a loss for words. John and Elena had gotten into several arguments since his return, but now that he was gone, Elena wanted to hear what he had to say. She clutched the ring and the letter, and did not even care that she was crying. Elena had lost so much, in such a short lifetime.
Once she composed herself to be able to read the letter from her biological father, she walked over to the ledge in front of her bedroom window and sat down. It was her favorite spot to compose her thoughts, and frequently write in her diary. She continued to clutch the ring and the letter in her hand. Her shaky hands began to open the letter and she memorized his handwriting. After exhaling a sigh, she began reading the letter out loud, even though she was the only one in her bedroom.
Elena,
It's no easy task being an ordinary parent to an extraordinary child. I failed in that task. And because of my prejudices, I failed you. I am haunted by how things might have turned out differently if I had been more willing to hear your side of things. For me it's the end. For you, a chance to grow old and someday do better with your own child than I did with mine. It's for that child that I give you my ring. I don't ask for your forgiveness or for you to forget. I ask only that you believe this: whether you are now reading this as a human or as a vampire, I love you all the same, as I've always loved you and always will.
John
By the time Elena was finished reading the letter from her father, tears were streaming down her face. She then regretted her past conversations with her father, regretting the fact that she told him that she would never be his daughter. So many things could have gone differently. He could have taught her how to ride a bike and to pick her up when she fell, or to walk her down the aisle. They could have been close, like most father's and daughter's were. Elena continued to think of what if's and what could have happend's, until it was time for her to go to the cemetery. When she arrived, she saw what was left of her family and her friends. As well as the main men in her life, Damon and Stefan Salvatore. Damon caught Elena's eye and nodded to her, as a way to comfort her. She walked over to John's grave and knelt down. Her fingertips traced his name, and she carefully placed a single red rose on the ground. Elena's brown eyes looked at the tombstone, and she quietly whispered " I forgive you, Dad". After she spoke, she got up and left the cemetery, with a small breeze that followed her. Somehow, she knew that her father had heard her, which made a smile appear on her face.
I hope you enjoyed my story. I always thought that Elena would forgive John, and that they would have had an amazing father and daughter bond. Don't forget to review. :)
