(A/N: This was inspired by the song "Shadow of the Day," which is where the title came from. Enjoy!)
Shadow of the Day
"Boq?" Nessa calls out weakly.
"Yes, Madame?" Boq hates calling her Madame when she is lying there, so sick and frail, but he can't stop. It's her punishment. She deserves it. Doesn't she?
"Could you close the curtains? The sun's in my eyes."
"Sure, Madame." Boq walks over to the window and closes the curtains. Darkness covers the room. "Madame, won't you have something to eat? It's been at least four days since you ate, and that was just a few crackers."
Nessa shakes her head. "I'm not hungry." It is a lie.
Boq finds her hand, cold and clammy, under the covers, and takes it in his own. "Mad…er, Nessa, please eat something. Can't you see that you're killing yourself?"
Nessa manages a flimsy smile at Boq's use of her name. "No, Boq. I'm not hungry. Can I be alone now?"
Boq smiles back at her, squeezes her hand. "Okay, Nessa. Let me know when you get hungry." He hopes it will be soon.
When Boq is gone, Nessa whispers, "Boq, you don't understand that I'm trying to kill myself."
