Black Foreboding

By: ChoCedric

When Sirius learns that his pup, his precious godson, has been chosen to be champion for the Triwizard Tournament, he is absolutely petrified. He knows it's extremely strange, for Dumbledore had assured him he'd drawn an age line to stop such a thing from happening. Harry's note to Sirius also expressed his worry about the entire thing; it's definitely not a note telling him how excited he is about it. He tells his godfather that the entire school thinks he put his own name in, except his friends.

Sirius feels a torrent of anger on Harry's behalf. How dare they disrespect Harry like that! He knows that if the Triwizard Tournament had occurred while the Marauders were in school, he'd have tried his best to get his name in despite the age line, but he knows Harry's pleading and frightened words are genuine. Help me, Sirius, he begs. I'm too young for this!

Butterflies of worry churn inside Sirius, and he's terribly afraid for Harry. Is this a plot to try to get him killed? He read about the fiasco at the Quidditch World Cup, and the strange disappearance of Bertha Jorkins. He also knows that that foul, cowardly Pettigrew escaped just months ago, and he's sickened to know that his ex-best friend is probably with Voldemort right now. It makes him feel nauseated, because he suspects that Harry will encounter the monster again, no matter what Sirius does to try to protect him.

When Harry, Ron, and Hermione go to visit him in the cave, Sirius feels even more despair. He feels completely useless, for he can do nothing to help his godson in this state. With each passing day, he hates Peter more and more, and whenever he looks at Harry, James's features and Lily's eyes shine out at him. He misses his brother tremendously, and his beautiful adopted sister just as much. Oh, how he wishes he could see Harry every day!

On the day of the third task, Sirius feels a terrible sense of foreboding. He lies in Hagrid's pumpkin patch, waiting for the results. When, after a couple of hours, he hears screams and sobs and calls of "He's dead! He's dead! He's dead!" coming from the Quidditch pitch, terror unlike he's ever felt before grips him. When Professor McGonnagall tells him to come to Dumbledore's office, he knows he's about to be told news that will shake him to his very core.

And moments later, he sees Harry, more shaken, alone, and vulnerable than he's ever seen him before. He's claiming that Voldemort's back, and Peter, that despicable, disgusting Peter, killed seventeen-year-old Cedric Diggory simply because his master told him to. Sirius vows there and then that he will do anything to protect Harry, even if it means giving up his own life. Lily and James entrusted him with their son, and he's been a complete failure so far. But he promises them that during Voldemort's second rising, he'll sacrifice life and limb to take care of him.

When Dumbledore tells him later to contact the old crowd, he leaves Harry's side, but very reluctantly. He knows this is his responsibility, but he doesn't want to leave the boy, as shaken as he is. He wants to take him in his arms, hold him, and never let him go. But, he turns into the big, bearlike black dog, and softly pads out of the hospital wing, swearing to himself that he will succeed in his mission and make sure that the Order of the Phoenix is reformed. Anger and hatred fill him at the thought of Peter, and he thinks to himself, revenge will be sweet when we finally meet again.

And with that, he Disapparates from Hogwarts grounds, ready to fulfill his vow.
