Chapter one

I stared at the blackness off the back porch. In the morning it was a beautiful sight. A clear fresh creek from the lakes that are a few miles farther up the mountains. But now all I can see is the out lines of trees, from the moonlight reflected off their leaves. Tomorrow I have to leave for my mother's house in La Push a reservation town in Washington. I would say something like it's a shit small town but for the past few months I've been living with my Aunt and Uncle in St. Ignatius Montana. During this time I really have been to shit small towns, for example Virginia City Montana. That's where Uncle Craig's mom lives and I met everyone in town... not even kidding. It used to be the capital of the Montana territory but now all that's there are a bunch of old people and tourists. The occasional bar hopper from the neighboring 'villages' comes in to bullshit with the bikers that are constantly through. But mostly it's pretty boring.

Although I am going to miss Montana and the smell of dry grass and Ponderosa pines. I am so excited to be going back to my own forest. Where the smell is of wet pine needles and the ocean brine. Where the natives on the land are the people of my tribe.

I should probably go to bed now I'm in for a long haul tomorrow. With that thought I turned and walked back into the house. My Aunt Caroline was standing in the kitchen. She sleeps even less than I do.

"Hi Kari did you need anything, are you hungry?" She didn't turn around but just continued making what looked like a pie.

"Aunty it's 1 in the morning." I said giggling. She turned around with a smile.

"Sooo?" She said the wide smile still on her face.

"Okay. Fine but I can get it." I said. She's gonna love this.

I turned to the fridge and quickly grabbed the whipped cream can and turned back around.

"Hey now that's not what I meant." She said with an obviously fake frown on her face.

I smiled at her and tipped back my head spraying the cream straight into my mouth, and smirked at her when I was done. She smirked back and snatched the whipped cream out of my hands.

"With the junk you eat it's a wonder your not 300 pounds." She said sarcastically and tipped her head back repeating my earlier actions.

"Hey! I wasn't finished with that." I whined at her. She smiled at me and came towards me holding the can her finger poised to fire. Oh shit.

"No. Don't." I said my eyes getting wide. She grabbed my hand and brought the can up spraying whipped cream all over my cheek.

"UGH," I shrieked and grabbed the can back from her. "No more for you!!!" I said. I wouldn't dare do it back. Not that she was intimidating she was 5'4 to my 5'8 but she was tough and never gave up.

"You started it darlin'." She smiled sweetly.

"No I Didn't!" I replied indignantly.

"Oh." She said laughing. It was too much and I began to laugh with her. Yeah I am gonna miss this a lot.

"Well I better go clean up and hit the hay." I said after our giggles had subsided.

"Okay sleep well." She said and turned back to her pie crusts. I sighed and walked away. How are her and my mom sisters they are so different. I shrugged the thought off and wiped my face off. Well at least I get to see Embry again I bet the boy has grown another 2 feet. I got into bed turned off the light and settled down to rest.
