Note: This is when Jake and Bella are younger, when they make mud pies and sandcastles on the beach.
As people grow old they tend to live in the past. Not in their pasts particularly, but scrutinizing someone else's new life. They enjoy watching a baby being born, a toddler blowing out the candles of her first birthday cake, and a teenager getting their first car. Then they miss all of it; their childhood. They miss loosing baby teeth, learning how to ride a bike, and reading picture books. However, they can always watch two young children enjoy their new lives, hoping they live in the moment and not rush into the future. As these people walk by, they see two children playing on the wet beach.
"You should have seen it Jake, it was like HUGE with bricks everywhere! It was like being in a giant maze! I thought I was going to get lost!", the young, pale brown-eyed girl exclaimed as she continued to play in the sand.
"Did you go see the prison? I heard that there are still skeletons that lie in the dungeon!", the other child asked eagerly. His black, shoulder-length hair covering his dark toned face as the wind blew.
"The big guys at the gate wouldn't let us go there! They had it blocked off with some weird sign...", the girl gathered up some sand in her hands.
"I bet the prisoners escaped! I bet pirates freed them!", a smile shone brightly on the young boy's face.
"Jacob, there aren't anymore pirates", the sand shaped in her hands.
"How do you know? I bet they're in hiding!", the boy named Jacob grabbed another hand-full of sand and continued to help build.
"Hiding? Hiding from what?", the brunette tilted her head to the side.
"From vampires of course! Sam talks about them all time time! He told Embry that they're gonna get him while he's sleeping! So I bet they took the pirates!", Jacob shuddered at the thought.
"There's not such things as vampires...or pirates", the girl replied simply, "my mother told me." The two worked silently for a while.
"My dad said Rebecca is becoming to girly...she won't even play toy trucks with me anymore...all she wants to do is look at the makeup in the store and talk to her other girly friends who just talk bad about other people", Jacob paused, "you're not going to be one of those girls are you, Bella?"
"Never", Bella promised as she grabbed a leaf off of the sand.
Just as Jacob took the leaf and stuck it on the top of the sand castle a car rolled into the nearby parking lot.
Bella stood up and quickly dusted the sand off of her jeans.
"Daddy!", she dashed over into her father's arms.
"Hey Bells, did you have fun?", her father Charlie asked as he easily picked her up.
"Jacob thinks there are pirates...", Bella laughed.
"Pirates? Of course there are pirates! Haven't you ever heard of Captain Hook?", Charlie looked over to Bella, who shook her head.
"Mommy said Cap'n Hook isn't real...", Bella replied monotone.
"Yeah...I bet your mother also said some other things weren't real...", Charlie mumbled, "come on Jake, got to go take you back to your father".
Jacob took Charlie's hand and climbed into the police cruiser after his friend.
Later that day Bella watched Jacob walk into his house happily, not knowing what awaited them in the future. She didn't know she wouldn't see him until she seventeen. She didn't know about all the trouble she would have to face later on. She didn't know she would have to choose between Jacob and someone else. She was just glad to have someone to talk to now.
