Author's Note:I've decided that the best way to keep this plot flowing smoothly is to make the following bit an excerpt in the middle of the fanfic rather than the beginning. I'm planning to start over if you will. My new idea, I think, will be much more interesting in terms of plot progression. Just to clarify, the "Lion's Den" bit will still be included, just later on in the story line. I will post the beginning here when I am finished. Please, bear with me. Any questions, comments, opinions, or requests about this change can be submitted either via reviews or the PM system. Stay brilliant! -Holmesian
It was a regular Sunday afternoon. The last case had been solved mere hours ago, but, already, Sherlock was becoming fidgety. It did not take long for John to notice, and he mouthed the all-too-familiar word in time with Sherlock as he said it: "Bored!"
John shook his head dismissively and took his seat in the armchair. "You've just solved a case, Sherlock. How can you possibly be bored already?" " Exactly, John! Solved. As in past tense. I need something to do now!" Sherlock, who had previously been tossing the skull from one hand to another, stomped somewhat childishly to the sofa and flopped onto it.
"Yes, well, I don't know how to help you, Sherlock."
"You could start by being more interesting!" Sherlock rolled onto his left shoulder so that he was facing the wall.
John glanced up momentarily at this but soon returned to his newspaper; he'd lived with the detective long enough to know it wasn't personal. The paper that day was not very exciting. He flipped to the crime section: a few car-thefts and a mugging, but nothing Sherlock would think worth investigating. John continued to peruse the paper until he saw a small advertisement. "Look at this, Sherlock. They've reopened the Central London Zoo! Harry and I used to go there all the time when we were kids."
"Fascinating," Sherlock mumbled through the cushion.
John rolled his eyes, "…and they're doing a special today for veterans!"
Sherlock turned around to study John. It was obvious John had spent time in the military; it had been evident since the first time John had set foot in the laboratory. The fact that John was also quite a few years his elder was also apparent. But something about him receiving a veteran's discount at a zoo made Sherlock feel uneasy. Those types of things were traditionally reserved for the elderly, and to think of John being included amongst them… Well, it was off-putting.
"Right, get up. And put some trousers on while you're at it. We're going to the zoo."
"The zoo?" Sherlock sneered.
"Yes! I think you'd be glad given how mind-numbingly bored you were a few minutes ago. And you'll be able to show-off while we're there. It'll be fun!"
"Fun. Fun's boring." But never-the-less Sherlock rose and made his way to the bedroom to change out of his blue robe.
