Title: God's Grace

Author: Kathea

Rating: PG-13, on the safe side for language

Pairings: Eventually, Luke and Grace. Hints of Joan and Adam, if I feel like it.

A/N: Joan of Arcadia is one of my new favorite shows. Finally, a show about God that isn't sarcastic or sappy. And my fiancée loves this show, that's a high compliment from a guy who would rather watch hunting shows than JAG. I will be writing from God's point of view in parts. I hope I don't offend anyone or Him. Please read and review.

Disclaimer: I don't own Joan of Arcadia. I also don't claim to know what God thinks.

Chapter 1: What I know

They don't understand. Joan thinks I need her to accomplish things. She doesn't know this is all for her. It's always been for them, my creation, my children. Some don't even think I'm here and others hate me for things I didn't do. Every time one of them hurts, I hurt. Every time one of them cries, I cry. Every time one of them turns their back on me my heart breaks. It's a good thing I'm God otherwise I'd probably be crazy. Despite the bad choices, the consequences, and the blame, I still love them. I love them more than they can possibly understand. How does that song go, "Amazing love, how can it be?"

Arcadia High School

"Rove, you seriously need to ditch Cousin It." Grace told Adam as they walked towards AP Chem. Silence greeted her angry remark and she looked up to see Adam's face. It was hurt, more hurt than she'd ever seen.

"I'm sorry you feel that way, yo." Adam said quietly. He turned away and entered the classroom taking his usual seat. Joan was surprised to see Adam and Grace enter separately. There usually was some joke or conversation between those two. Joan had never seen this kind of tension. Adam had completely withdrawn and Grace looked her normal angry self but with a kind of shell shocked look in her eyes. The teacher droned on but Joan couldn't help but be preoccupied by what was surrounding her. When Adam left to get lab supplies, Joan leaned over to Grace.

"Grace? What's going on?"

"Nothing Girardi."

"Doesn't seem like nothing." "Well, you're wrong then." Grace replied waspishly. The rest of the class proceeded far too slowly for Grace. Adam wouldn't look at her, wouldn't talk to her. Grace hurried from the class when the bell rang. Leaving school didn't even cross her mind as Grace pushed through the double doors and walked across the parking lot. She was surprised when she realized that she was in the cemetery. A maple tree cast a sun dappled shadow across a random grave. Grace slumped down to the ground and proceeded to let built up tears flow down her face. Too few people ever saw Grace Polk like this. Emotions, other than anger, disgust, or distrust, were not to be broadcast to the public. It seemed that it was only Adam that ever brought her to tears. The few times during their friendship that they had fought had been death for Grace. Adam was never mean when they fought but it hurt nonetheless. Usually it was something Grace had said that pushed him away from her. Grace's only comfort was that Adam always came back.

Grace woke to a late afternoon sun and a pair of jean clad legs blocking her vision. She released a deep sigh of relief when the face attached to the body wasn't Adam.

"Oh it's you."

"Nice to see you too, Grace."

"What do you want, Nerd Boy."

"Joan sent me to find you. She's worried about you."

"Tell her I'm fine. I'll call her tonight. Now go."

"No problem. I didn't want to come anyway." Grace looked up sharply at Luke's comment. Her face tightened and Luke could tell she was upset.

"How'd you know where to find me?"

"Hunch." She felt more than saw it when Luke sat down on the ground beside her.

"I thought you were leaving."

"Yeah, I am."

Grace would never admit that Luke's presence was comforting lest of all to herself. Never the less, they both say quietly till the sun sank down below the horizon. Luke pushed himself off the ground and reached down a hand for Grace. Grace ignored his helping hand and levered herself off the ground. Luke watched sadly as Grace disappeared into the dusk.

"Hey, Adam!" Joan's voice came through the phone. "Cha, Jane."

"What was up with you and Grace today?"

"Nothing."

"It didn't look like nothing."

"You'd have to ask Grace."

"I will. See you tomorrow."

"Bye, Jane."

Joan turned around in her room to see little girl God waiting patiently on her bed. Joan gasped in surprise before scowling at the girl.

"What do you want now?"

"Nothing, Joan. I don't even have an assignment for you."

"Really?"

"Really. What I have is more of a request. Let them alone Joan. Don't stick your nose in on this."

"Why? They're my friends."

"Joan."

"I know, I know. Will be revealed in time. Yada yada."

"Exactly Joan." With that the little girl hopped off her bed and walked out of her room. Joan growled and flopped onto the bed. She would have to find out what had happened.

/Grace, grace, God's grace. Grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace, grace, God's grace. Grace that is greater than all our sins./

Hope ya'll liked it. Kinda vague and short. I'll keep going. Kathea
