A/N: This is a short oneshot songfic for everyone's favorite love/hate relationship: Derek and Casey.

I've been walking, I've been thinking

I've been looking at you

Sideways

He always sees her. Out of the corner of his eye, of course. Never letting her see him back. Never letting her get too close.

But he's always aware of her presence. Even when she is mad at him. Especially when she is mad at him.

He can't help but see her.

And he can't help but refuse to let her see him.

Because the truth is, she scares him. Not because she's his stepsister. Or because she is domineering and overbearing sometimes and needy and insecure other times. It's because he could see a future with her. Settling down. Becoming responsible.

I have no problems, dipping in my feet

But the trouble comes when I have to jump

And Derek Venturi doesn't know if he is ready for that. The commitment. The selflessness. The growing up. But when he looks at her, from across the dinner table, from the other side of the hall, from the small space between them on the stairs, he knows. He could have it all. With her.

All the reasons not to seem pretty good

At the time

Casey MacDonald sees him looking at her. She knows he thinks she doesn't, but she does. Because she is looking right back at him. Secretly, of course. She fights with him constantly, yet she takes her cues about their underlying relationship from him. She gets so frustrated sometimes because right now they are in a deformed junior high sort of relationship. All that is missing is the giggles and notes that say, "Do you like me? Check yes or no." Somehow, she can't bring herself to laugh about it, however. It's too important for that.

She finds it hard to concentrate on her dancing, or her acting, or her singing if he's in the audience. After all, how can one spin around or get into character or hit the perfect pitch if her eyes are glued to a point in the audience? And what about their family? If there was ever a reason to ignore all that is going on beneath the surface, that would be it. But when she looks at him out of the corner of her eye, she thinks that maybe, just maybe it might all be worth it.

'Cause I've been walking, I've been thinking

I've been looking at you

Sideways

So they continue. She glances at him over her homework and he can barely keep his eyes on the road as they ride in the car next to each other. Maybe one day, she'll walk up to him and tell him everything. Maybe one day, he'll take her hand and they will finally admit the truth. Their glances will no longer be sideways, stolen, or secret. Or maybe they will just continue looking at each other. Sideways.

Hmm . . . okay. So that ended up being kind of weird. Thoughts? Please review!!
