"Wow, I'd thought I'd die before I ever heard…" Her voice got cut short. Bang. A loud gunshot rang through the air.

I felt something splatter across my face. I turned to Kate. Boom. Her body hit the floor. There was a bullet hole in the middle of her head, blood oozing out the back.

I looked up to Gibbs who was staring in the other direction, pointing his gun across at a building. "Ari..." He whispered silently, the anger clear in his voice. I looked back down at Kate's body; there was a pool of blood behind her head.

Gibbs walked over, a deadly look in his eye. His face softened when he saw her, crouching at her side. He carefully stroked her hair before regaining his composure.

"Call McGee and search this building and every other one within a mile radius. I want every bullet and bullet casing you can damn find. Bring in as many people as you can to help. Don't come back until you have found something good enough. Okay?" Gibbs ordered.

I straightened up, pulling out my phone. "McGee get up here. Kate's been shot." I stated.

I could hear the worry in his voice. "Is she okay?"

"Yeah she's fine McGee, all happy and well after being shot in the head by a sniper."

"She got shot in the head by a sniper? Does that mean-"

"Yeah it does McGee. Kate's dead."

The line went dead for a moment before I could hear the faint sound of McGee gathering up his stuff. "I'll be up in a few."

"He's on his way up."

Gibbs acknowledged this as he walked off to the stairs, pulling out his phone.

"Ducky, Kate's dead. Shot by sniper. You'll have her body by tonight." He said coldly before dialling another number. He went through the stairs as he continued to talk, passing the bad news on to Abby.

I looked down at the body beside me, the harsh reality hitting like a bucket of cold water. Kate was dead. She wasn't coming back.

McGee joined a few minutes later, his face stained slightly with tears. He stood in front of me, not looking down once at Kate's body. There was an awkward silence between us as we faced the reality in front of us. I broke the silence, repeating Gibbs' orders.

"We search every building within a mile radius, looking for bullets and bullet casings. Anything that will help us you bring back. Bring in as many people as you can, okay?"

McGee nodded timidly, turning away to talk to some people. We got to work, in somber silence, barely talking at all. We worked quickly, scanning as many buildings as we could, searching for anything useful. We spent about three hours on the closer buildings, due to Gibbs' suspicion of Ari being quite close. McGee worked out that the shooter was 600 feet away. We went through that rooftop with a fine comb, searching for any evidence. We only found three brasses, after at least 6 hours work. We headed back to the Navy Yard, ready to face Gibbs with the little amount of evidence we could find. At this rate, it looked like we weren't going to catch Ari. That would mean Kate would die in vain, something none of us wanted.
