She stood in front of me, head cocked to the side, one finger twirling her hair. She opened her mouth, then shut it and exhaled sharply through her nose. She dropped the hand in her hair, resting it on her hip. "I'm angry at you," she said.
I felt my brow furrow. What had I done this time? And why wasn't she throwing things? That was how she normally told me she was angry.
"But it's not really your fault, so I'm just gonna leave for a while. I'll be back around when I don't feel like smacking you so much."
She turned and flounced away.
It was a week before I saw her again. I woke up in the WRO infirmary after a mission gone bad and saw her sleeping in the chair next to my bed. "Yuffie?" I asked.
Her eyes shot open and I saw they were bloodshot and baggy. "You're up!" she cried, leaping forward to hug me awkwardly. I patted her shoulder tentatively.
She slapped me. I touched my cheek, working my jaw carefully. The ninja training meant she can hit hard when she wanted to, although the slap meant it was more to make a point than to hurt me.
"YOU UTTER BASTARD!" She sprang away from the bed and stood there with her hands clenched into fists. She whirled and started to pace, hands on her hips. "Why the hell would you let yourself get hurt like that you . . . you shit! I was so worried! It took forever to find you and then you wouldn't wake up and . . ." she broke off and turned her back. "You really scared me you know? I thought my last words to you would be me being mad cuz you're blind."
I propped myself more securely up. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to worry you." I didn't know you would worry about me.
She cracked her neck and faced me again, eyes red. "Well, you did. So you're taking me to lunch once you're up and about. To make up for it. And I get to call you Vinnie as much as I want and you can't threaten me."
I felt a tiny smile tugging at the corners of my mouth and tried to force it down. "Whatever you want Yuffie."
"You know it," she grumbled, plopping back into her chair. "Now, Reeve wanted to talk to you. So, y'know, call him. Or something."
