Title: On the Edge of Great Battle
Summary: The thoughts of a soldier about to fight along side Merry and Pippin before the black gate.

On the Edge of Great Battle

On the edge of great battle
Two hobbits stand tall
Even though tall for them
Isn't quite high at all.

Their courage shows honor
What big hearts they must have
To stand in the face
Of what's wrong and what's bad.

From what I understand
These hobbits aren't warriors
They much prefer farming
Than killing with others.
They eat and they drink and they smoke their small pipes
How did they find themselves wrapped in such fight?

Yet for one that only comes up to my waist
His eyes are determined to beat this great hate.
He fears as I do
That today we may fall
But both of our hearts
Must believe in our cause.

There is great chance that our side will falter
And the rule of the eye will live ever after
But today as I watch these hobbits beside me
I know there is something greater inside me.
Something greater than the fire eye knows
Something more powerful than Gondor's yet shown-
The willingness to give so that others may have
Our lives may be forfeit, but it won't be that bad.

The world will go on because of our strife
Children will live to new days thought out of sight.
The ring will be gone- its evil be done
For the other two hobbits- a victory won.

As the black gate now opens
We stand at the ready.
Our hearts beat hard
Yet our feet remain steady.

For Frodo and Sam
We must fight this foe.
For Gondor, for Rohan,
For a Shire we don't know.

Good luck to you Merry, and Pippin as well.
To Sam and to Frodo this wish I do tell-
Climb fast and climb high
Over mountain of stone
And drop into the fire
That which only you've known.
End this great evil
And all will be well.
I fight for you frodo
Let's hope this ends well.
