It's nighttime and it's dark in Brittany's bedroom. Just the way she likes it. And just the way Santana hates it.
It's dark and it's silent and the only light being let in is the sliver that's peeking in under the door from the hallway nightlight for Brittany's little sister. So really, it's not much. It might not even be considered light. It's more of a lighter shade of dark. Which is really nothing knew. Santana should be used to this by now.
For as long as Santana can remember, Brittany's never been afraid of the dark. Brittany's bedroom has just always been pitch black. Santana on the other hand, has hated the dark her entire life. She hates not being able to see. And even though her bedroom walls at home are painted black, she always makes sure she keeps her door open at least a half a foot so the hallway light can seep in and brighten the room just enough. Seeing is the most important sense in Santana's opinion.
If you can't see something, how are you supposed to know what it is?
It's easy. Just trust your other senses.
Santana doesn't trust her other senses. So, as she lies next to Brittany, out of breath and naked, she really, really, really wishes she could see something. Anything. A decipherable lampshade would even be appreciated right now. Just, anything that wouldn't make her feel like she's drowning in a sea of blackness with no way of escaping.
She almost starts to panic, but Brittany reaches for her hand and tangles their fingers together.
Don't worry. I'm right here.
Santana can't help but worry. The dark is a scary place.
Can we like, turn a light on? I can't see anything.
Santana tries to make this sound casual, but Brittany knows. Brittany knows her. She knows how scared of the dark Santana is, and still, she refuses to give into this fear. So, instead of turning a light on, she props her head up on one hand and looks down at her.
Did you know that people with blue eyes see better in the dark?
And then, with that one sentence, Santana's fear vanishes like it never even existed. She guesses that Brittany can just be her other senses. She trusts her. She'll lead the way.
