"Madara…" Naruto's voice was haggard. His breath was labored and the pain in his lungs was liquid fire. Time was running short.
"I want…t-to ask you…one question…" The Uchiha felt the fox's grip tighten around his arms. Struggling was futile. His hands were like a vice-grip, unmoving and hard as stone. A short hiss snaked out of the raven's mouth.
He could only stare on as a foxy grin appeared on the blonde. For some reason, Madara hated that grin. It was so…defying. It was like he was mocking all that the Uchiha had accomplished. It was uncaring. Unafraid…and at that moment…Uchiha Madara was uncertain.
That stupid gleam in his eyes. That stupid setting sun. The annoying way the sunlight silhouetted Naruto's frame. What a stupid site. A stupid blonde, holding onto Uchiha Madara for dear life, an annoying, mocking grin plastered on his face, his clothes torn in countless places, his broad shoulders, and the way he tilted his head so that the stupid fox was actually looking down on him. It was so frustrating. And at that moment…Uchiha Madara was afraid.
"Do you fear death?" The raven had only a second for his eyes to widen before the whole area exploded in blinding light.
There was a sound…soft at first but increasing in volume. Rocks…the sound of rocks…being grounded into a fine powder. What a screeching, rubbing, high-pitched agonizing sound it was. Then…it disappeared.
Madara didn't know what to think of it. Everything was quiet…and he slowly opened his eyes.
He didn't know what to think of the site at first. A furious red chakra chocked the air. Tiny rocks flew all around. It looked as if they where caught in a hurricane. Debris everywhere, somersaulting through the air. The Uchiha thought was uncanny that none of it was hitting them…until he saw numerous cuts appear on the fox's face. His eyes continued to widen and he watched the beautiful blood roll down Naruto's face. Panic hit him. He frantically wiped his face around. The whole area was destroyed. This kind of destruction would remain for generations to come; a permanent scar in the earth.
He tried to yell out for the blonde to stop whatever he was doing but…no words came out. In fact, the whole world was silent. He didn't want to die. Not here…not ever…not now…
He tried shaking the fox, but he was in a trance. For the first time…Madara noticed something strange in the blonde's eyes.
A sense of peace.
It was as if the fox didn't care that he was killing them both, that this was suicidal. That he was killing himself!
And for the first time…Uchiha Madara was scared.
It was too silent. And it was at that moment that something dawned on the Uchiha.
This was it.
The Uchiha had no choice but to read the blonde's lips as he spoke, the words never reaching his ears.
"Do you fear death?"
Four simple words. Yet you have no idea what they mean to Madara. The sacrifices he went through to achieve this level of power. The struggles, battles…
…to finally realize that, in this final moment…that…
…gods don't bleed.
"Because I don't."
Then everything was black.
Uzumaki Naruto died that day.
Along with Uchiha Madara.
Not many were there to witness Naruto's last battle. But those who had the honor…never forgot it.
Generations came and went…and soon the story of Uzumaki Naruto faded into the past.
Except for us. We never forgot it. We passed it on. But even we, Konoha's new leaves, begin to forget.
So one day, we wrote it down. In order for generations to come to remember Naruto's story, we preserved it. Every detail painstakingly recorded…in hopes that one day, people around the world would remember him, and would finally recognize him for the hero he was.
And this is it:
"The Tale of Uzumaki Naruto."
