BASICS
The night air was cold, chilling to the bone. After making a tour of the camp, to see how the crew was faring, Chakotay made his way back to the Captain. She was sitting in a dark corner, her back against a rock, and her long hair was loose over her shoulders, blanketing her body. By now there were several fires throughout the camp, but still not enough for everyone to get close. The welfare of her crew always more important than her own, Kathryn had declined a place by a fire so someone else could have it. But she was visibly suffering. Her body was shivering and she was hugging herself in an attempt to keep warm. Around her, crewmembers huddled together in pairs to preserve body heat, but Kathryn was a solitary figure. As he made his way over to her, Chakotay saw the relief in the eyes of a few watching crewmembers. They were clearly concerned for their Captain's wellbeing but were too intimidated by her rank to approach her. Only the brave dared initiate talk with the Captain.
Chakotay reached Kathryn now and she looked up at his approach.
"How are the crew doing?"
"Ok," Chakotay replied, sitting beside her. "There are a few more fires and Neelix and Kes have finally got one going."
"I'm glad. Kes was really starting to feel the cold."
"Looks like you are too. And I'm not impressed. A captain should never disobey her own order."
"Which one?"
"To huddle together to preserve body heat."
"No one wants to get cozy with the Captain. But if my First Officer is offering, then I gladly accept."
"I am."
With that he put his arm around her and Kathryn leant into his strong body. As she did, his arms enfolded her and his hands chafed her back.
"I feel warmer already," she said. "Thank you."
Chakotay smiled, cherishing the closeness. "My privilege."
