One day, Allen found Van in the garden, pacing back and forth. "What's up Van?"

Allen sat down on a nearby bench, his hand stroking his chin. "Have you tried giving her flowers and candy? Chicks dig that stuff."
Van nodded sadly. "The last time I went out on Escaflowne, I found a little shop out in the country and brought her a dozen roses and a box of chocolates. But when I was coming back, a Zaibach guymelef attacked, and after the battle I found that the flowers had wilted and the chocolates were squished."
"Tough break man. Maybe you try writing a song or something." Allen suggested.
Van groaned and shook his head. "I'm no good at things like that."
"It's okay; I'll help you. Here, I write down a song, and then when I tell you to, you add different words into it. Okay?"

Taking a deep breath, Van placed a kiss on Hitomi's soft cheek. "I said I love you Hitomi. I've been trying to tell you for a long time now, but the words just couldn't come out. So Allen and I keep up with the idea of me writing you a song, but that was a big stupid failure. I hope you'll forgive me..."
Wrapping her arms around his neck, Hitomi placed her head on his chest, whispering, "I forgive you Van. I love you too."
They walked off together, a ball of paper lying on the ground behind them.
