What it is, what to look for, and how to prevent it
IN THE PAST FEW MONTHS, A DISEASE has been pillaging the streets of Miserablia. The disease appears to be a strange, mutated form of he highly infectious illness, le horreur, more commonly referred to as "Javertisitis". According to the Medicinal Department of Miserablia (MDM), more than half of Miserablians are currently infected.
"The really strange thing about the disease," says Dr. Miser, head of the MDM, "is that it is infectious not by touch or by breath, but rather by verbal contact. Therefore, I recommend all Miserablians who are not already infected to start going around with earplugs, to prevent further spread of the disease."
Consequently, it is very important to know the symptoms of Javertisitis, and be able to recognize them efficiently. Common symptoms include strange, persisting obsessions, extreme stubbornness or tenacity, random outbursts or rants about the stars, severe lack of forgiveness, a heightened sense of duty, and, in more extreme cases, acts of dunking oneself in the river or freezing nights. Some reports have been made concerning suicidal thoughts or sudden facial hair growth on the cheeks, but it is unclear whether this is Javertisitis or something more severe.
There is no known cure to Javertisitis; however, studies conducted by the MDM have shown that brainwashing or being forced to stay indoors on nights of remarkably starry skies seems to reduce the severity of the symptoms. Until a cure is found, all Miserablians are strongly advised by the MDM to be on their guard for the symptoms of Javertisitis. Reports of extreme cases should be made to the Javertisitis Hotline, 24601-9340, or at .mis. Miserablians are also advised to steer clear of the river, as that seems to be where Javertisitis is circulating most.
