Night had fallen and the air was still. The stars twinkled brightly and Hermione Granger could make out the different constellations despite her tears. She was far away and out of sight from the Gryffindor Tower. Perfect, this was how the day was supposed to end, she thought.

A cool wind tickled Hermione's neck, bringing momentary relief from the stale heat that hung in the air. Raised voices in the distance drew her attention. From her little hideaway amongst the branches of a large beech tree, she craned her neck for a better view.

Pansy Parkinson was screaming at Draco Malfoy, who was trying to give her a half-hug. She shrugged him off and stomped away. Well, one more person to mope with, thought Hermione. But Pansy and Draco hanging around together secretly confirmed the whispers that had been floating around; the two were dating.

What did Draco Malfoy see in a cow like Pansy Parkinson?

Hermione had to admit Draco was very smart and good-looking if only he could just wipe his trademark smirk off his face permanently. Maybe, Pansy had more depth, something intellectual to interest Draco.

Hermione shifted, a dull ache was spreading through her back. The stars seemed to flicker and beckon at her. Soft, slow footsteps came closer. Draco paused beneath the tree. Hermione sucked in a large gulp of chilly air. He wasn't going to wait there, was he?

She silently willed Draco to continue walking. Unfortunately, he collapsed onto the ground, leaned his back against the trunk and cradled his head with his palms.
