A/N: I really just want to fix everything between Mer and Der. So this is an attempt at fixing what's been repeatedly broken.

Meredith entered the daycare and saw her precious baby playing at a corner oblivious to what was about to happen. It broke her heart knowing that another child was going to be taken away from her. It was as if the universe really hadn't had enough yet.
She couldn't let Zola be taken away and she sure as hell wasn't going to let the universe win again. She stooped down to pick the baby up when her pager went off.
She jumped.
That happened a lot in the past few minutes. Every text she got, every call, every beep—it made her jump. A sure sign that kidnapping a child was a bad idea.
She didn't want to check to see who was paging her. She was pretty sure it was Janet. Or Derek. Or Alex. But it could be Cristina and she knew both of them needed each other right now.
...
The nurse looked up, hassled. Dr. Shepherd may be dreamy but he was very persistent.
"But I already paged her!" she said.
Derek didn't look up from his coding patient. "Page her again!"
He knew he was breaking the rules. Bailey would probably fire him if she found out...not that Baily could fire people. But knowing Bailey she could and Derek knew she'd find a way to do it. And he didn't have a choice. Everybody in the ER was busy and nobody was as skilled in these situations as she was. Plus, they had a case like this a month ago. She knows exactly what to do.
...
Meredith stared at her pager. It was Derek. Should she ignore it? She glanced at Zola then back at her pager. If she took Zola she knew Derek would probably hate her even more. And if she answered his page...maybe things would be easier. Maybe he'd forgive her.
She chuckled lightly. Derek forgiving her was a long shot. But still...
She took a breath. Screw the universe, she thought. She kissed Zola on the cheek.
"I love you," and she left.
...
The door burst open and Derek looked at Meredith who had just entered. "Scrub in." He could see tears forming in his wife's eyes.
His voice broke as he said, "I need you." He didn't notice how much not until he saw her again. He was holding so much inside that seeing her somehow got them out of him. He wanted to kiss her and tell her how much he understands, how angry he was but not angry enough to ignore her.
He wanted to hold her and tell her how he should've understood, how she was counting on him and instead he let her down. He was her knight-in-shining-whatever and he just let her fall like that.
Derek saw the look in Meredith's eyes. She didn't say anything but he knew she was thanking him for calling her, for acknowledging her and he knew everything was going to be alright between them.
A/N: Tell me what you think. :)
