Hermione had a serious problem. She really, really wanted some cake. Or some brownies. Or some chocolate chip cookies. Unfortunately for her, she had exactly none of these things available in her flat. Luckily, one of her favorite bakeries was right down the road. She hadn't wanted to leave the house because it was currently raining cats and dogs, but she couldn't ignore her craving anymore. Grabbing her umbrella as the bakery was located in a Muggle area and she therefore couldn't use an impervious charm to keep away the rain, she bounded out the door and down the stairs.
She smelt the bakery before she saw it. The air was filled with that yeasty, sweet smell that one normally associated with baking. Her mouth was already watering at the thought of getting her hands on some chocolate, her favorite type of sweet. As she reached the bakery she wasn't surprised to see that it was mostly empty since the weather was fairly bad. She preferred it that way as it gave her more time to browse without having to rush.
The bell attached to the door gave off a twinkling noise as she pulled it open. Her eyes went immediately to the display case in front of her, filled with mostly scones, currant breads, and tarts. Completely uninterested in anything from that case she turned her attention to the next. Finding that full of a variety of biscuits she pondered purchasing some, but decided to stick with her original craving of chocolate. Hoping to find some in the next display case she moved on.
Jackpot.
The case was filled with all things chocolate. And there, right in the middle, was one lone piece of the bakery's famous chocolate fudge cake. In her excitement of the thought of getting her hands on that cake she did not notice the tall man with sandy brown hair standing near her. He was already being helped by a worker and his words, "I'll take that one, please," got her attention. Because he just so happened to be pointing to her piece of cake.
"But... I wanted that one!" she exclaimed, the words bursting from her mouth before she could stop them. Her face turned bright red and her hands flew to her mouth, covering it in embarrassment.
"Hermione?"
"Remus? What are you doing here?"
"I... um... buying some chocolate cake."
"Ah, right, of course. Sorry about that, by the way. I just really wanted some of their chocolate cake."
He chuckled. "I know the feeling. What do you say to splitting it with me?"
"Really? Since when do you share chocolate? Last time I tried to eat a piece of yours, you nearly took my head off!"
"Um... right... I remember that," he stammered, his cheeks tingeing with pink.
"Well, if you are serious, I'd love to share it with you. My flat is right up the road."
She could have sworn she heard him whisper 'I know' as he turned around to go pay for the cake.
Laughter filled her flat as she talked to Remus over the piece of cake. She was happy that she ran into him as she didn't get to see him as often after moving out from Grimmauld Place. She was surprised that they bumped into each other in that bakery. It was nowhere near Grimmauld and completely out of the way for him. She had a brief flare of hope that maybe he had been on his way to visit her, but she quickly brushed that off. She could admit that she had a serious crush on the older man and that crush was part of the reason she moved, before she would have ended up making a complete fool of herself.
"So, Hermione, I was actually in this neighborhood for a reason."
"Oh?"
"Yes. I've missed having you around. I've... been wanting to ask you something for a while now, but I've been nervous and then you moved out and I just wasn't sure – "
"Remus! You're rambling! What is it?"
"I... um... I was hoping you might be interested in having dinner sometime."
She stared at him in shock, never expecting that that was what he was going to say. However, he seemed to take her silence as a rejection as he started stammering that he was sorry and would leave. She popped up out of her seat and grabbed his arm before he could get far. Instead of verbally giving her answer, she pulled him in close to her, pulled his head down, and kissed him.
He tasted like chocolate.
