The Path

I walked along the same path I'd walked every day since I was very young. I saw the same people along that path. Avoided the same cracks that I could easily trip over. Touch the same tree that had always been there. Be barked at by the same dog that barked at me everyday like I was a stranger. And see the same car that drove down my street with the driver always seeming to run late for work.

I thought that path would never change because it hadn't changed in anyway possible the 20 years I'd walked it. But one day a new person walked along the path. He looked to be around 30, tall, lean, toned arms, Philippine skin, black spiked hair, and large hazel eyes. The first day he walked on the path with me I didn't talk to him at all; the next day he was gone. I kept walking the path as I always did, the guy didn't walk the path for a month.

The second time we walked on the path he said hello to me and we exchanged names, his name was Ryan. He and I would walk the path together everyday talking about anything and everything. He had gone to a college down in Hawaii, where he grew up, then decided to move here because he was sick of all the tourists and wanted to see snow in the winter instead of sun and sand. He was trying to get his masters in teaching, he taught graphic design to high school students he also was the sponsor for the graphic design club where they would make video games.

Everyday he would wait for me on the path that I'd walked on for 20 years and then we'd walk together just talking about stuff that was on our brains.

About half a year later I invited him to my home so we could keep talking about something. When he asked me why I still walked the same path I answered that my parents would walk on that path with me when I was young. My parents had died in a car accident when I was 13. We talked about our siblings for a while he had an older sister and a younger brother he said I would like his sister apparently she and I are similar.

We went out for drinks after talking just for an excuse to keep talking with each other. He walked me home that night, I kissed him goodnight. I walked on the path alone the next day. I didn't see Ryan for a few weeks after that night. One day as I walked the path he was there with another woman that I'd never seen. He introduced her to me, "Chelsea, I'd like you to meet my wife Autumn."
