The Forgotten Doll
The storm raged as Roxas stumbled out of the forest, battered by the stinging rain. A sudden crack of lightning illuminated a large, seemingly abandon house before him. His instincts told him to seek shelter regardless of consequence; besides if anyone did live there he doubted they would turn him out in weather like this. He pounded his fist against the door upon reaching it, as no-one would be able to hear his voice over the howling, banshee like shriek of the wind. Luckily the door was unlocked and Roxas quickly slipped inside.
Once inside, the violent storm seemed muted to him. He could still hear the thundering rain, along with the occasional peal of actual thunder, but it didn't seem as threatening now. He turned and looked at the room he was in; it looked to be a dilapidated parlor. 'I may as well explore a bit; I doubt this storm is going to let up any time soon.' he thought. A loud roar of thunder rattled the windows as if to confirm Roxas' assessment.
Roxas had explored most of the house and found it as empty and untouched as the parlor he had been in when he first entered. The floorboards creaked and groaned as he pushed open the door that lead to the kitchen. After so long in the dark house, he immediately noticed the faint glow coming from under a door a bit to the right of the one he had just come through. But unlike the other doors in the house, which stuck and creaked, this one opened smoothly with out so much as a whisper; beyond it a wooden staircase descended to a subterranean room. As Roxas descended, the stairs squeaking lightly under his weight, he noticed the light coming from the bottom was not steady, but rather it flickered slightly and erratically. When he reached the base of the stairs and entered the small room he saw the source of the light had been a dying fire in the hearth. What he found in the room though unnerved him.
Row upon row; shelf upon shelf of old porcelain dolls lined the stained, sepia walls. Their unblinking glass eyes seemed to dance with the small flames that flicked across the dying coals. The room had no windows; down here the raging storm above was nothing more than a whisper, and the more Roxas listened the more it seemed the whispering was coming from the dolls. Whispers of the things they had seen, things long forgotten, as they watched him. Thoroughly unnerved he turned to flee the creepy room, and that's when he saw her.
She sat there among them; her blue eyes as glassy and unseeing, her complexion as pale and smooth as the dolls around her. She was the doll brought to life, then left broken and forgotten. He froze when she opened her mouth and spoke, her voice only a little louder than the whispering of the storm (at least he hoped it was the storm). "My name is Xion. Are you here to play with us? Please play with us. Play with us…forever!" The door slammed shut, locking with a 'click' as Roxas' screams could be heard carrying up from the basement. Or perhaps, it was just the wind…
