Summary: A much different way of viewing Hojo.
Author's Ramblings: To my knowledge, this particular plotline has never been explored. Or, better phrased, it has—but in a much different context. Many have said that I have a gift for portraying Hojo. This is simply another experiment in doing so….
"That's so sweet and noble of you, Hojo-kun!" Eri exclaims, hands clasped in front of her chest as though she's about to swoon. "I'm sure Kagome-chan will think so too!"
I can't help but blush at her confidence. It's really nice when people really believe in you. "You really think so?" I ask out of habit.
All three girls nod vehemently.
"It's certainly better than the herbal remedies you've given her before," Yuka adds, arms crossed in front of her. She shifts her weight from one leg to the other. "I mean, Kagome's really girly. Of course she'd love a gift like this." She glances to her left, "Don't you think so, Ayumi-chan?"
Ayumi blushes and meekly adds her opinion, "Well, I know that I personally would be very flattered if a boy gave me a new breed of flowers he cre--"
She is cut off by the sound of the school bell, signaling the end of the lunch period. "See you later, Hojo-kun," the girls say together as they leave, giggling and whispering among themselves, toward their next classes.
I lag behind, my thoughts centered on Kagome, and the knowledge that those three girls couldn't be more wrong.
I sigh. Despite their confidence in my gift, I know that it will not make her mine.
Still, I like to fantasize.
"Boy, what the hell are you doing digging out here? Do you have any idea what time it is?"
I shift slightly, moving my head to face the source of the gravelly, matronly voice. "I have not gotten it right yet," I respond quietly.
"It is three in the goddamn morning, that's what time it is!" she says, throwing her hands up in exasperation. "You are too obsessive for your own good, you hear me?"
I wince. "But…I want them to be perfect, Ma! They're not the right color yet. They're too purple. They need to be bluer." I look directly at her, something akin to desperation consuming me as I display what my fingers are delicately clutching. "Don't you think that if I combine it with this kind of flower, I might get the right color?"
She gives me a sad smile. "You might."
I smile, focusing once again on the flowerbed beneath me, imagining how much the flowers that will grow here will match the shade of Kagome's eyes.
Suddenly her small, wrinkled hand is on my thigh. "Just because she enjoyed tending to your herbs with you when her and her friends were here, though, doesn't mean that…" and here she trails off.
I look away from her, knowing how she would have finished that sentence.
"Jinenji?" I know.
Still, I like to fantasize.
Meta-ramblings: Yes, I went there. Please tell me what you think of this experiment!
