In my line of work you're supposed to be ready to handle anything. Y'know,
expect the unexpected?
I mean, I'm no Wolvie, but I've been through my share of scrapes - Bastion
probably being the worst
of them. Guess I never expected irony to come and kick me in the ass.
Air already smelled of blood by the time they started nailing my friends - my teammates up on the crosses. Those of us who were still conscious were forced to watch. Can't even begin to tell you what it's like to watch as some jerk-off nails one of your best friends up to die. Two words don't exactly even begin to do that scenario justice. Still it sucks. By the time they got to me, my thoughts had already turned to the outback. Didn't help to tune out the pain, but it definitely made for some colorful 'life flashing before your eyes moments'. Only this moment? This one started right after I followed Storm and company through that portal to Oz and ended about right when I dragged Wolvie's smelly rear into the tunnels below the base. Twisted, huh? When I first met Wolvie, I saved him after the Reavers crucified his butt and there I was dying the same way.
A few images followed after that - mostly after I lost all feeling in my body; prolly when I 'kicked the bucket'. Ev, then my parents. Eventually, the lot of us ended up at LL&L, though I didn't know how. Think I know why, though. Rose was there. It was about then that I remembered Wolvie telling Rose I was his lifeline, that he wouldn't be there without me. It was like she was telling me that it wasn't my time. She gave me a good shove, and that's about when I felt something warm flowing through my veins and heard Wolvie's voice. S'when I came back.
"Don't make me come over there, Worthington. Yank him Annie. We don't need any more dead today."
Words weren't exactly pleasant, but that voice? Music to my ears - even if he sounded like someone tore his heart out and stomped all over it.
"Who died?" was my response. To be honest, I was kind of suprised at the sound of my own voice. Relieved, though, when I forced my eyes halfway open to look at Wolvie.
"You did, little pain in my butt! Scared the life half outta me!"
At the time, guess that's when I knew why I had seen my parents, Rose, ..and Ev. Couldn't let myself cry though. I was alive, and Logan, Annie, and Warren sounded like they'd been through hell and back. And Wolvie? Well, as usual, he kinda smelled like it too.
"Really? Cool. ...Dude. You ever hear the words, 'mouth wash?' "
The look Wolvie gave me was enough to put me at ease. He knew firsthand what it was like to hang from a cross with metal protruding from your flesh. He'd also been through worse. Much worse.
I was still his lifeline. Warren? Now Warren had become mine. Ange's death had hit hard, damned near numbing Paige and I both. Still, the ties that had already been forged became even stronger - and now? Now I can only look forward.
