Stunned, she watched him drape himself over the cross. He was both hanging on the cross and burning from it. Martyr and deviant, all rolled up into one.
She didn't move. Couldn't move. The shock was too great. The plaintive need of his last plea hung in the shadows.
She could still feel his pain and recoiled in horror. The guilt washed over her and she found herself silently crying.
She thought about him, about who he was and what he had done. For her. For the person he thought she was.
She knew then that she wasn't Her. She wasn't worthy of this love that he carried in him. For her. It was all-encompassing, all-knowing, all- forgiving. It was all for her and it was all too much. It was much too unguarded, vulnerable, fragile and tender for her to mess with.
Through the darkness, she heard him moan. The pain of the cross he bore overwhelmed him. Finally, she moved toward him, tugged at his body and welcomed him into the small comfort of her arms.
