He blinks back to awareness, and the light is there. In a world that is alternately too bright and too dark, it's the one thing he finds he can look at.

He doesn't remember much, beyond the pain, but this? This he remembers. The light, next to him, burning brightly, determinedly. It's there when he opens his eyes for the first time, and whoever's holding it is speaking softly to him.

He doesn't recognise the words, but reaches for the light. It won't burn him Why would it? It burns for him, after all.

Hands gently care for him, familiar hands if he stops to think, but it's the light he recognises, turns to, clings to. He remembers it from before but the rest eludes him. Remembers it burning so much brighter with anger, before dimming in despair as he fell. Remember wanting to tell it to live, that he wasn't worth it.

He knows that everything he was, is, ever could be, is tied to the light. He reaches out and grabs for it, feeling a warm arm jerk in surprise under his hands, before the voice starts a soothing litany and he falls back into a restless slumber.
