Full SummaRemus Lupin X Nymphadora Tonks. When Remus Lupin was infected with lycanthropy as a child, his life changed abruptly: he had to resign himself to living his life as a monster, as an outcast of society. He never dreamed that true love would ever have any meaning in his life; he never expected to meet a woman who would not only support him, but also help him overcome his self-hatred and truly feel like a human being. With Tonks this happiness could happen to him - if he would allow it. Canon, in which the characters are expanded and their background stories illuminated. Only the end will deviate from the book, but WITHOUT contradicting it - If you ask yourself how this should be possible, then you have to stay with it until the end of my story :P (RL/NT)
Chapter 01: A new member
"Sirius, I need to talk to you." Sirius looked up immediately from the boring daily prophet that he was currently reading. He looked at his best friend with concern. If Remus was calling him s real name—Sirius—something must be awry.
Usually, Remus called him Padfoot when the two were alone, and he knew from experience that using his real name could only mean one thing: Remus had some serious worries.
The last time he had called him 'Sirius' was during the Hogwarts era – again lost in self-doubt, Remus wanted to leave school for the rest of his life; to stop endangering his classmates with the danger he presented to them as a werewolf.
Luckily, it was Sirius, along with the energetic support of James, who managed to convince him that he wouldn't be a danger to his classmates in the Shrieking Shack. —"and besides!" they had said, "Dumbledore would stop you without a doubt if you really got to the castle in some way."
"We... are alone, aren't we?" Remus asked a little hesitantly, pulling Sirius out of his thoughts. The uncomfortable feeling in Sirius' stomach grew.
Remus seemed anxious, and since he was a quite calm person who rarely lost his temper, it had to be something really important. Sirius nodded silently, put the daily prophet out of his hand and sat up straight in his armchair. Lupin closed the door and cast the imperturbable charm on it so that no one could listen and began to walk up and down the kitchen. Sirius followed him with a tense gaze until Remus finally stopped, breathed deeply and broke the oppressive silence.
"I have broken my biggest taboo and…" He swallowed hard. It was obvious to him that it cost all his self-conquest to continue. "… and I fell in love with Tonks," he burst out.
Several months earlier.
As Lupin entered Grimmauld Place 12 that day, he immediately noticed that something was different. The already present members of the order whispered excitedly and the tense atmosphere seemed almost tangible. He stood in the doorway, watching all the people in the kitchen who were oblivious to his presence.
"What's wrong?" he asked loudly to the crowd and couldn't hide the worried undertone that was resonating in his voice. The whispering died instantly and all eyes were on him. He felt a little uncomfortable to be the center of attention, so he addressed his words directly to the small, round woman with the slightly curly, orange hair. "Molly?"
"Oh, Remus, I'm glad you're here! Mad-Eye send us his Patronus earlier and announced that his protégé had immediately accepted and would be a member of the order from now on," beamed Molly. "She will come today! Support, especially when we need it most!"
"Just..." said Dedalus Diggle, "... she's supposed to be quite clumsy and some fear that she's going to... well... more damage-"
"Nah!" Molly quickly waved him off. "Mad-Eye has assured that she can behave very well when it comes down to it..."
"... and we all know that Mad-Eye would never bring anyone into the Order who he isn't convinced is trustworthy and helpful," Arthur Weasley added, smiling at his wife.
"He's more careful than any of us," Sirius interjected.
"He's more careful than you," said Molly, but the reproachful undertone was clear.
"But we shouldn't forget that Mad-Eye was her mentor during her Auror training. "Hestia Jones ran her hands through her long, black hair before she continued. "It's possible that he wants her to join because of sympathy."
"I trust Mad-Eye's judgment completely." It was now Arthur Weasley who spoke again. "Apart from that, she has passed the Auror training and that might mean something."
"How about we take a few weeks to get to know her before we get a rash picture of her," Lupin tried to end the discussion. Apart from finding it unfair to classify the newcomer as a potential threat to the Order, he wanted to prevent her from coming into the kitchen and finding everyone in suddenly embarrassed silence.
"I think Moony is right," Sirius agreed with him and quietly thanked him for it. He was sure that Sirius had seen through his thoughts - not only because he was very intelligent, but also because they had known each other for so many years.
"I think I'll leave the room for now - have no idea if Mad-Eye told my dear second-degree niece that an alleged mass murderer was present," grinned Sirius, asking Remus to call him in later as he walked by, "when the time for a big shock was up."
Lupin smiled back widely. Since he knew that his best friend hadn't been a traitor after all, he felt much more cheerful, much fresher, much younger. It was almost as if Sirius, a part of himself, had returned to him.
"Well, Molly, may I ask what we will have to eat later", Lupin said cautiously, careful not to let the subject return to the newcomer so easily - after all, she could arrive any second?
Why did he care so much about her even when he had never seen her before? Maybe because I know exactly what it's like to be accepted into a round where I'm not quite welcome, he thought bitterly.
"Yes of course you may, my dear, there is a stew, here are again some ingredients just before draining!" Now amused, Remus looked at Molly's slightly reproachful face and inevitably had to smile.
He saw Molly Weasley as a friend and a mother at the same time and although she sometimes exaggerated her excessive care, he felt a bit more at home with her nearby.
"I'm looking forward to it," he said with a smile. "Oh, hello Minerva," he greeted Professor McGonagall, who had hurried through the kitchen door with her usual quick step. Three minutes later, Kingsley and Dumbledore also appeared.
"If they still want to arrive on time, they must hurry," said Daedalus a little impatiently. "I have a request for you." Now Dumbledore raised the word and immediately everyone hung spellbound on his lips. "Please welcome our newcomer warmly in our midst, introduce yourselves, pay attention to them, but don't surround them..."
"It has to be here," Tonks mumbled a little absentmindedly. She was so nervous that she managed to get to the wrong point earlier.
"There you are," Mad-Eye grumbled. He suddenly appeared out of nowhere in front of her without warning. Confused and enthusiastic, Tonks stared at him.
"Fidelius Charm, no reason to be surprised. Come on, read this!" he growled and handed Tonks a small shred of paper. "And memorize it well."
Wordless, but with glowing eyes, Tonks took the piece of paper from his hand and quietly read the words over and over. "The headquarters of the Order of Phoenix; found at Grimmauld Place number twelve, London." She was so nervous that at first, she only read incoherent words before she finally understood the message of the note. Grimmauld Place, number twelve was the house which was affected by the Fidelius Charm – also the reason why she hadn't been able to see Moody; he had been in the area of the spell – but this piece of parchment had probably just initiated her into the secret, and she should now be able to...
Tonks looked up from the paper and where just a moment ago numbers eleven and thirteen had been, there was now an old house, with a battered door, dirty walls, but quite clean looking windows. They had apparently been cleaned not so long ago.
Her mouth formed a silent "Woaaaah!" before she noticed how Mad-Eye took the shred from her hand again, let it burn and limped unimpressed over the newly appeared stone steps onto the house. "Don't make a sound in there," Moody grumbled. Then Tonks threw her hair back – now a shoulder-length dark brown - and followed her mentor inside with a bright smile.
"Awesome," she mumbled silently as she looked around the corridor, sparsely lit by a few old gas lamps. It was a little dusty, exactly her style. Slowly she walked forward and inspected the wallpaper, which began to peel itself off before she as threw flat on the floor with a loud bang.
"Nymphadora!" Mad-Eye warned angrily.
"Sorry," she whispered. She had stumbled across a troll leg, somewhere on the wall in front of her. She shook herself off, still feeling the buzz of adventure, despite her earlier mistake. Moth-eaten curtains blew to one side, revealing a screaming repulsive-looking woman in a portrait.
"BLOOD TRAITOR! MUDBLOOD! STAIN MY HOUSE! SHAME OF MY FLESH! SCUM! BEGONE!"
Shocked, Tonks covered her ears. Great first impression, she thought and smiled tormented as Mad-Eye limped to a screaming portrait and tried to pull the curtains back into place.
Meanwhile, the other portraits had also started to scream. "Nymphadora", Mad-Eye pressed out with closed lips. "Give them a good Stunner." He nodded toward the other screaming images and Tonks got up, pulled her wand and ran off – and right into something else that had just hurried out of a nearby room.
"Pardon me." She heard a pleasantly calm voice saying a little about himself before she understood that she had probably just collided with a member of the order. "Oh, I, no, it was my fault, it -" "Later," the man interrupted her as he laid his hands on her shoulders and gently moved her away from him.
He held her shoulders, and she could now see this peculiar member. His brown hair was streaked with grey and his dark brown eyes radiated peace and made him look younger again. His face was in places scarred, but somehow it suited him. Even his shabby, patched cape didn't bother her.
He turned away from her and strode towards the portrait to assist Mad-Eye.
Lupin was amused that the new girl had already seemed so clumsy, but he also felt a little sorry for her.
With great effort, he pulled the curtain back to its place and noticed that the other portraits slowly fell silent – the new girl's stunner spell worked perfectly.
Shortly afterwards, it was quiet again in the corridor. "So, now," Lupin smiled and walked, one hand outstretched, towards Tonks. "Remus Lupin," he said softly. She grabbed the hand. It felt pleasant, somehow rough and soft at the same time.
Then she whispered back. "I'm really sorry."
"Interesting name," Lupin joked quietly to lighten the mod a little. Tonks felt slightly better after her miserable appearance and thanked Lupin silently for it. Before she could think anymore about anything, Mad-Eye pushed them both impatiently into the kitchen – where already a dozen curious eyes were directed at Tonks.
