It had been 3 months since Jane lost her baby. 3 months of passing baby stores and feeling that pang of guilt in her chest telling her that it was her fault, 3 months of seeing families with their newborn silently wishing that was her and Maura, 3 months of seeing Tommy with TJ and wishing she could feel that happiness.
She didn't realize how much she wanted to have that baby until it was gone. All she kept telling herself was that she should have taken better care of herself, she should have taken desk duty as soon as she could, she shouldn't have went into that house until it was clear.. But there was an explosion and that was it. Her baby was gone and all she told herself was that it was her fault.
Walking into her apartment tonight and collapsing onto the couch was the best comfort to her. No company, no burdens, no cases, until she heard the knock on the door. She opened it to see a crying Maura with a piece of paper in her hand and a bag over her shoulder.
"Jack broke up with me," was the only thing Maura said before Jane pulled her inside.
"What happened?" Jane asked, hoping that douchebag didn't touch one hair on her best friends head.
"It's a long story." Maura choked out in between sobs.
"Did he hurt you?"
"What? No. Physically, no. Emotionally, yes."
"I'm here when you're ready to talk. And judging by that bag, you're here to stay the night. That's fine." Jane said, picking up the bag Maura had dropped to the floor. She was making her way to her room when Maura said it.
"He broke up with me because I'm pregnant, Jane."
Jane stopped for a second taking in what she just heard. She turned around and made her way back to Maura.
"Is that what this paper is about?" Jane pointed towards the paper on the counter.
"Yes. You can read it."
Maura,
I'm sorry to walk out on you, but I'm not ready for this kind of commitment. You know that. I'll help out with the baby financially, but I'm no where near ready to raise a baby. I'm sorry.
- Jack
Jane just looked down at Maura with empathetic eyes. She knew exactly what Maura was going through.
"I'm going to keep it. I'm going to keep the baby. I know how upset you were when you lost yours and I think it would be good for me."
Jane took all of those words in knowing Maura was ready for this, even though it was completely unexpected.
"And I want you to raise it with me. We can be elephants together, Jane. I want to raise this baby with you. I love you."
