Toothless has just pulled the small body from the icy water, his boy had been struck by lightning while trying to prove his innocence, the lads father held on to his unmoving son.
"Hiccup?" Stoick removed his helmet and began a search frantically for a heartbeat.
Gobber and the Hooligan tribe looked on as their chiefs face fell; his eyes fill with watery tears as he hugs his son's body, the man's body trembling.
"I'm so sorry, Hiccup!" screamed Stoick at the top of his lungs "Oh, Thor almighty!" begs the grieving father "Please, please, bring back my son!"
Gobber places his hand a top Stoick's shoulder; he only stares at the now lifeless body of his nephew and young apprentice. Stoick lifts his son into his arms as he walks forward "You all did this!"
The villagers stare in shock; they'd never known the lengths the boy would have gone to save his dragon.
"You all wanted Toothless gone so badly, but we lost my son! The lad was right about the metal, we were wrong!" Toothless begins growling into the sky, as if begging the gods to bring Hiccup back, to take his life instead.
Stoick falls to his knees in pain and anger, still clutching his little Hiccup, pulling the boy into his chest. "The future chief of Berk; is dead! My only child is with his mother in Valhalla."
Everyone begins to cry, even Mildew sheds a few tears, it's true he hated the dragons and wanted the boy gone, but he'd never imagined Hiccup's young life ending to achieve his goal.
"I never meant any harm to the boy, Stoick." Speaks Mildew to the still weeping father and chief. "I just wanted things back to how they were; dragons will be the death of us all."
Gobber pushes the old man away "Get out of here, Mildew. You've done enough already."
Mildew goes to compromise with the blacksmith, when he turns to face the tribe. All watery eyes remained fixated on him, each with a deathly, betrayed glare.
"The boy dying is harsh, but you'll all thank me in the long run for this." Mildew pushes his way through the crowd and begins heading home.
"You are here by sentenced to exile, get off my island before I run you through myself!" Commands Stoick to the now fleeing senior citizen.
Gobber lowers to Stoick's kneeled figure "It's time we give the lad a proper Viking send off to Valhalla." Stoick makes no response, only rising to his feet, carrying his boy towards the ships.
Hiiccup is laid across the wood, father and dragon standing over the boy, helping prepare him for the long journey. Toothless rests his head over Hiccup's unmoving chest, he wanted to die with his boy, only he knew that's not what Hiccup would have wanted.
Stoick unfolds a white sheet, his hand running through Hiccup's auburn locks for the last time "Val will take good care of ya son, you're finally going to see your mother." White covers Hiccup's lifeless face as the pair walk off the ship.
"A great future chief has fallen, an heir, a leader, a son, a friend." Cries Gobber as the arrows are lowered into the red ember, each aimed accurately towards the sheet covered Heir sailing out to sea, fiery arrows catching the wood ablaze.
Astrid would never forgive herself for letting Hiccup go. His last words remained forever in her mind and heart
"I'll be fine."
Three little words that couldn't have been any farther from the truth
Would Hiccup have still gone up there had he known the consequences? What was she asking that question for; Hiccup would have done or given anything to save Toothless … And in the end, he had. He'd given up his own life and frankly, she doubted he'd regret a single second of it.
I was finally able to get on my laptop and I found this one-shot I'd written quite some time ago, but never posted. So here it is! See you all in the next story.
