"You can't make me."
"We can. And we will."
"No you can't," Alex Rider had been sitting in a chair in the corner of the room, looking bored but listening intently to the conversation. Now he stood up. "This is a free country. Willow has rights, you know."
Alan Blunt sighed. "We've been through this enough times, Alex. You and your sister are needed in the field again. I don't want to force you, but we need two agents, and you two are perfect – young, brave…"
Willow grinned. "I know." Her expression changed in an instant. "Flattery won't work."
"Read my lips. We are not going." Alex's eyes were steely.
Alan frowned. "Need I remind you, children, that Jack Starbright is only still in England because of you helping us. We might just happen to put her on a plane back to America…"
The twins scowled simultaneously. "Bribery."
"No. Just a simple fact."
"We're not toys! You just pick us up, put us down – you only take any notice of us when you need us to work for you, and the rest of the time… well… you just walk all over us!" shouted Willow. She glared at the man, before storming out of the room.
"Alex?" Alan raised his eyebrows.
"Get real."
"Like I just said, Jack's visa is expiring…"
Alex fought to control his temper. "I'll talk to her," he said, forcing himself to be civil, and followed his sister out of the room. Alan sighed at his retreating figure.
"He's made for spying. But spying isn't made for him."
