Ninety-nine Red Balloons

Kate walked out of the elevator and stopped short, confused by the unexpected sight of a single red balloon, tied to a pen on her desk. She went over to it and looked for a note, but there was no indication of where it had come from. Tying it to the drawer on her desk, she asked McGee if he knew where it came from, but he didn't. She considered asking Abby to scan it for fingerprints, but decided that if whoever it was from wanted to remain anonymous, then she would let them, for now, at least.

When she got back from lunch, there were two more tied to her desk, both red, and identical to the first. Now she had three total, none containing a note, or a name, or even, for she had finally asked Abby, a print. The next day when she arrived, there was another one waiting for her, and then there were two more after lunch. This happened on the third day and every day after that for three and a half weeks. Even when she worked through lunch the next time she left her desk, two balloons would mysteriously appear. At the end of the day, she always left carrying three red balloons.

After lunch on Wednesday of the fourth week, she found not only two balloons, but for the first time, a handwritten note.

Kate-

"Ninety-nine dreams I have had, in every one a red balloon." My dreams are of you.

There was no name at the bottom of the note, just a tiny sketch of a balloon. Kate smiled as she read the note, confused, but touched all the same. What she didn't notice was Tony watching her. Maybe someday, he thought, smiling, I'll tell her it was me.
