Niles got up extra early. Today was a very special day. He was about to meet his little girl for the first time. Gloria had been born to Dahpne three years ago. She had given the child up for adoption because she was only 18. She felt that Gloria would be better off being raised by a mother and father. She couldn't provide the baby with anything but love. This couple could provide her with love and all the things she could possibly need (and want). But Gloria's father died when she was a baby and her mother was dying now. It was decided tat it would be in Gloria's best interest to move in with Dahpne and Niles. They were in their 20's and had a strong foundation. In addition they had a baby boy so Gloria would have a little brother. Jennifer was driving Gloria to Seattle so that she would have some extra time to spend with the mother who raised her for 3 years.
"Mommy," Gloria asked.
Jennifer looked over at her daughter.
"Yes sweetheart," she said.
"Why do you want to get rid of me," Gloria asked, "Was I a bad girl."
Jennifer stopped the car and looked at her daughter.
"Sweetheart," she said, "I love you so much. I love you to the moon and back. I don't want to get rid of you. But do you remember how we talked about mommy being sick?"
"Yes," Gloria said, "You don't feel good."
"It's more then that sweetheart," Jennifer said, "I'm going to heaven soon. Because I'm going to heaven I won't be here to be able to take care of you. You're going to your birth mommy. She and your new daddy will be able to take good care of you and love you and you'll have a little brother."
Gloria perked up. She always wanted a little brother or sister.
"Cool," she said, "How old is he?"
"He'll be a week old tomorrow," Jennifer said.
"Can I hold him," Gloria asked.
"Well that's up to your mommy and new daddy," Jennifer said.
"Will I see you again," Gloria asked.
"One day," Jennifer promised kissing her cheek, "But you'll have such a great life with your new daddy and your mommy you won't even think about me."
"You'll always be my mommy," Gloria said a tear falling from her cheek.
Dahpne and Niles were outside when Gloria showed up. They had taken David and they decided to wait outside so she could meet them as soon as she got here. Jennifer hugged Gloria and said goodbye.
"Gloria," Dahpne said.
"Uh-huh," Gloria said, "and you're my first mommy right?"
"Yes darling," Dahpne said picking her up.
Gloria felt the love in Dahpne's hug and she began to relax. She looked at Niles.
"You're my new daddy right," she asked him.
"Yes sweetheart," he said, "and this is your little brother"
"Aw," Gloria said, "Can I hold him?"
"Of course you can darling," Niles said, "But first lets get you settled."
Jennifer knew she didn't have long for this world. That was why she didn't go in. She wanted Gloria's transition to be as easy as possible. Jennifer probably had days left before the cancer started to get bad. Chemo was no longer working. She knew that she had to protect her child. Gloria would always be her baby but she was Dahpne and Niles' child now. It was where she belonged.
She felt a sadness but also a happy feeling. She knew she was leaving Gloria in good hands.
