"You need to go back."
The sentence is emphasised with Oliver stomping his foot. Percy sighs, looking up at him. Of course he's at Oliver's because where else would he go? Oliver's—well, Oliver's Oliver. Percy supposes that he's at Oliver's because he knew that Oliver would take him in; he wouldn't leave Percy on the streets.
"I can't," he says, trying to search for something close to understanding in Oliver's eyes. For once, they're uncharacteristically cold. Percy doesn't think he's ever seen them be cold. Percy only came to Oliver's because he thought that Oliver would be the one who would understand Percy. In school they both fought for what they believed in. They fought for different things, sure, but they both fought. Percy thought that Oliver would understand. He needs someone who understands.
"You can't go back to your family?" Oliver asks, sounding angry. He's pacing the floor in front of Percy while Percy sits on the couch, feeling useless. Yes, he knows he's a jerk for walking out on his family but if he just changes his thinking for what they believe in… Well, that's not very Gryffindor of him.
There is, a tiny voice inside of Percy says, a small chance you could be wrong. That's why you don't want to go back.
Percy pushes it down.
"Yeah, I can't go back to my family," Percy confirms. It's too late for that. He's not going to go back.
Oliver looks him up and down, looking disgusted. He shakes his head.
"Then I don't want you here," he tells Percy, looking away from him.
What.
Oliver is Percy's only friend. He can't just turn him away. Percy has nowhere else to go.
But it's not like Percy is about to start begging Oliver to let him stay. He's Percy Weasley. He doesn't do that.
Instead, Percy swallows hard. He won't let Oliver guilt him into going back, or whatever he's trying to do.
"Fine," he says, sticking his head up, prideful. "I don't want to be here, then."
Oliver looks him up and down, squinting at him. There's something behind his eyes. Maybe Percy just wants to see it, but he thinks he can spot a touch of sadness.
"Fine," Oliver says finally. "Fine."
Percy gets up to leave.
