Sometimes Satsuki lay in bed, wondering if the news of her new baby upset Hiro. He sounded fine on the phone, when she had told him, but he was acting a little strange now. She loved Hiro very, very much. She knew that Hiro thought the new baby was because she had thought Hiro was a mistake (which she certainly did not!) and wanted to finally have a child that didn't turn into an animal when she hugged them. But somehow, she couldn't find any way to make Hiro believe her when she told him how much she loved him. And now was her chance, she thought. Today was Hiro's birthday and she was going to show him just how much she loved him! She was going to bake a huge cake for him with his name on it while he was away at Kisa's house.
She headed down to the kitchen, a little slowly though, because of the baby kicking in her stomach, and got out a few big bowls and a few shallow ones to make the cake with. She started out following the instructions on the back of the cake mix packet, but then decided to add a few little things of her own. She added just a bit (in her idea) more sugar than necessary and put in a few carrots to make her cake a little healthier (leave it to Satsuki to randomly mix carrots into a birthday cake).
Then she stirred the ingredients about ten times and put it in the oven to bake. She went back upstairs for a while and took a little nap. When she woke up the cake was done cooking. So she went back down to the kitchen, took the cake out of the oven, and started crying. It was a mess. A total mess. Just then, Hiro came back from Kisa's house. "Mom, what are you doing?" he asked, suspiciously eyeing the "cake". She looked up at him and went hysteric. "I-… I was trying… to make a birthday cake for you and…" she sputtered.
Hiro went over to the cake and took a better look at it. It looked absolutely disgusting looking. It looked like a lopsided, undercooked, pancake with carrots spilling out of it. "It looks great Mom," he said. He took a plate from out of the cabinet and took a "slice" of the cake and slowly lifted the fork to his mouth. "It's delicious Mom," he said smiling. And he finished the whole cake. Satsuki burst into tears again, but she was not crying because she was sad. This time, they were tears of happiness.
