HAWKBALLAD
Bird and beast were once at war.
One loved sky, the other, floor.
Among the raven, hawk, and eagle,
A distance was considered regal.
But the bodies of the rival snake
Were ever touching in their wake.
This was one of many boundaries
Found between these feuding families.
From the neutral folk, a solution rose,
To create a friendship between these foes.
The Tuuli Thera, of avian royalty
Bound the Prince of the Serpiente.
The royal family refused to bend,
But hawk and cobra wanted war's end.
Leaving their loves, this pair was bonded.
To their union, their worlds responded.
A tremulous peace, by this was founded.
No serpent killed, no avian grounded.
But discord rose from hidden places.
Betrayal from guardians of both races.
Traitors wanting the war they lost,
Feeling justified at any cost.
An arrow meant soley for the noble hawk,
Struck also the naga to the slayer's shock.
Grieving the loss of his mother's life,
The prince hovered near his wounded wife.
Cursing the blow of the despiséd dart,
He peered into his breaking heart.
He was taught to hate from life's beginning
That soulless avian way of sinning.
He knew that she, like all her kin,
Had hated his people to their very skin.
But to lose her now, that he'd come to know her,
Would kill him surely as snow kills flower.
He began to weep, when upon his shoulder
He felt her timid hand grow bolder.
She soothed him then, with comforting gesture.
He proceeded to tell her how much he missed her.
But in that instant were the traitors found,
And everyone hurried to gather 'round.
They were sentenced to suffer as was only just
For the crime of breaking their sovereign's trust.
Finally, the prince and the Tuuli Thera
Began to create a whole new era.
They made a world where sparrow, viper, and dove
Could live in a peace forged solely through love.
