Title: Her Son
Summery: A little one-shot about Naruto's mother. You don't read a lot about what happened to her.
Disclaimer: It's not mine
Dedication: To Becca, Tony and Cade. You inspired this and even though you'll never read this I admire your courage.
"If I continue the pregnancy, will the baby live?"
"I can't guarantee that, but if you make it full term and we're able to deliver the baby quickly, he might make it."
"It's a he?"
"Yes, but if you continue this pregnancy, you won't have the strength to make it through any kind of birth. The baby's taking everything you have"
She can remember sitting on her mother's lap, listening to stories about when her parents had been ninjas together. Every time her mother finished with a story, she'd ask the same question "Mama, why aren't you a ninja anymore?" And her mother would always smile and say "Because I like being a mom more than anything in the world". Back then it was unspoken that you couldn't be both a mother and a ninja at the same time, things were different now. But that didn't matter…
"If you have this baby, it will kill you" The medic at the hospital had told her, he'd said a lot of other things, but unlike a lot of female ninjas she had no interest in medical jargon and it meant nothing to her. Only those words…it will kill you. She already loved this baby and for the first time in her life she understood what her mother had meant all those years ago. Loving your child more than anything…willing to give up anything for it…her career…her life?
Could she do it? Could she give over her own life for her child's? No one would blame her if she ended the pregnancy, it wasn't as if she was against the practice of doing that…but this was her baby, made from a love between two people so strong it had overcome insurmountable odds…they could make it through this, couldn't they?
Her husband, what would he say? What would he want? She didn't know, and for a moment she wished she wasn't married to the Hokage and that her husband was just a normal man who could be with her when she had to make decisions like this. They were in the middle of a war and he was gone more often than he was home…his latest mission was going to keep him away for weeks…he wouldn't be home until long after the decision had been made. But he'd been so excited when they'd found out that they were having a baby…they had both been. This was their son.
"I'm going to have the baby"
