His hand still grasps my wrist where he pulled me to him as my eyes slowly shift down my arm. His fingers loosen as he watches my gaze move across each digit. His adam's apple bob up and down before he finally releases my wrist, dropping his arm to the side.
"Sorry." That mangled word pulls my attention back towards his face. He looks at his shoe as he slowly scuffs it on the sidewalk and clears his throat. Thoughts begin to race through my brain. What was he like with Amy? Did he bring her coffee and bagels in the morning? Did he kiss her softly goodnight? Did he talk to her on the phone for hours? Did he ever wish it were me?
And before I know what I am saying the question falls out of my mouth. His eyes instantly flick to mine, the fire building in them. I repeat my question. He just blinks twice, his face like stone, blocking my view from the answers I need. I walk away, digging through my purse for the keys to my apartment. Josh Lyman can go to hell.
"Everyday." His quiet voice comes from behind me. I stick the key in the door. He just wants to get laid tonight and that's all he sees; his chance walking away. That's all he'll ever see. "I swear to you, Donna," he whispers fiercely. "Everyday." And that voice is what makes me turn to look at him. He slowly approaches, his shoes crunching on the dead leaves that lay scattered about.
"Sometimes it was all I could think about." Crunch. "How I wanted it to be you when I opened my eyes in the morning." Crunch. "How I craved to have my arm around you while we sat on the couch and watched a Mets game." Crunch. "How I wished you could be there just to…to surround me." And with a final crunch he stops. "I've been fighting with this for a long time," he says taking my hand gently. "But I've realized that you just can't fight good love; it always wins" his dimples make a shining appearance as he smiles. "And…and I'm glad about that, because it's." He lets out a rush of air and rocks up and down a little on his feet. "…I know I'm messing this up, but…Donna you lift me up everyday and this is…right. So, don't walk away from me, please. Give me a chance…Give me a chance to show you how I can love you, everyday."
My eyes water as I find my voice. "Yeah," I smile and pull him closer. I think I'll take my chances on everyday.
