Chapter 1 ~ Running Away ~
I looked outside our rundown apartment. They came earlier than we had expected. I looked towards Emma. I promised Mum and Dad I would take care of her, she was only 7. Emma looked at me worriedly. "Crystal, what are we going to do? What will happen to us? Will they take us like they did to Mum and Dad?" She said. "I don't know Emma." I replied. What were we going to do? We've been running from the Government for a few weeks now. I looked at what I had become. What all of us had. Mutants they called us. We had powers, which humans wanted to contain. We must fight I thought. We can't let them win.
Kevin paced around the room impatiently, trying to figure out a plan. He snapped his fingers and flames burst out of his hands. He closed his hands and they were gone. Fire was his special ability. I looked to Emma, her power was to turn anything invisible including herself. My gift was well I didn't really know. I could move things around by thinking, create force fields and read others minds. "They're close. You and Emma should go. I'll create a distraction while you go out back." Kevin whispered. I gasped, I wanted to stay and fight with him. "But they will catch you." I stuttered. He was my love, my life. If he died it would destroy me and I would only blame myself. "If I go with you, then they would catch us. If I create a distraction then you'll go free. If anything were to happen to you I would never forgive myself," Kevin said "go my love." It took a while for me to process what he said. I didn't want him to go. He kissed me on the lips. "I love you." He whispered into my ear and he disappeared through the front door. A tear welded in my eye. "Emma, let's go." I whispered. We ran outside into the bustling city. I couldn't help thinking if I didn't do the right thing letting him go.
We ran down the busy streets. I felt my legs ached from running so hard. I stopped for Emma to catch her breath. "Crystal. Where's Kevin?" Emma asked. I felt my whole body shake. What was I going to tell her? That the only person apart from me she felt safe with was taken away. That he risked his life just to make sure we were safe. I had to tell her the truth. "Emma, he's gone. But we're going to save him. And everyone else captured by them." I replied. She nodded her head, silencing her thoughts. I could sense that she was worried. But I just hugged her and whispered that everything was going to be alright. We walked down to a nearby park. We need a plan. I needed to see Alex. He was the only person who ever escaped the mutant prison. If he can break us in then we can fight. All we need is an army.
