I had never known another home than the city of Ashin. My parents had raised me to be honest, loyal, and hardworking so that someday I could work in the Fire Nation government just like them. The whole city was corrupt, and I stood alone. Living by myself wasn't exactly easy, but it was easier to not see my parents everyday. They too were corrupt. When talking to them, you could hear the joy in their voices as they described how wonderful the nation is, and that breaks my heart. I looked up from my book upon hearing a knock at the door. Standing up, I straightened my grey dress and tightened the red satin ribbon that held my hair in place. I quickly opened the vent cover and placed my book inside the basket that was wedge inside the vent. The door burst open just as I was placing the vent cover back on. My heart started to race as two cops stood before me. "Fawn," they said sternly. "Why weren't you at the evening meal?" I shifted from foot to foot, I can't believe I had been too caught up in my book to realize what time it was. The guards still stood waiting for an answer. "I apologize for missing the evening meal. My schoolwork on the Fire nation was very interesting, and I was so enthralled I lost track of time." My bare feet were pale in the warm light coming in from the window. After carefully weighing my response, one of the guards let out a small chuckle. "Fawn," he chuckled. "Always so interested by your school work. I will certainly recommend you for a spot in the city council! Just remember to report to your evening meals." The other guard nodded in agreement. When they were about to leave, the guard who had done the talking stated "George, why don't you wait outside. I am going to do a search of the house and I will meet you back at the headquarters." The other guard, who we now know is named George, bowed his head slightly and headed out the door. My whole body was shaking, what if he found my book?
