Monkeys Don't Marry Hedgehogs!

Russell fiddled with his bowtie on the steps outside the royal palace. He breathed out a shaky sigh and ran a paw through his ruddish spikes, thinking that would calm himself down. Oh boy... this is going to be dreadful, he thought hopelessly. She's going to look gorgeous and here I am, wearing a rented fresh-pressed tuxedo and tie with a red cummerbund. He put his chin in his paws and gave another sigh of distress.

"Russell, don't beat yourself up over this!" said a voice with a heavy dose of Indian accent. Sunil the mongoose sat down beside the hedgehog and took off his large top hat. He patted his friend's shoulder compassionately. "Princess Minka is going to be absolutely dazzled by your charming attitude and appearance like always. Just be yourself and this little... how to say this... soiree, will be a hit!"

He pumped a fist into the air to emphasize his encouragement towards the ball.

"Dazzled?" Russell looked at Sunil incredulously. "That's easy for you to say, Sunil. I mean, you already have a date. Not to mention she isn't a princess..."

Sunil felt the blood increase in his cheeks as he heard Pepper Clark laughing like a dork in the background.

"J-Just be yourself, Russell," he said with a calm voice. "And before you know it when you enter the ballroom, you'll sweep Minka off her feet!"

"You really think so, Sunil?"

"I don't think so, Russell. I know."

He was in awe when she made her appearance at the top of the stairs. Russell's mouth dropped to the floor as he watched the glamorous and glimmering monkey take graceful (and sometimes) clumsy steps down the long staircase.

Minka wore her hair up in a neat bun that was held together by a rounded trail of aquamarine beads. The blue matched the color of her elbow-length gloves and diamond-shaped earrings which dangled back and forth as she took careful treads. She wore a lovely shimmering dress that had the shade of a bright yellow that was in equal to her personality. Cheerful and kind... Beautiful beyond compare.

Russell's mind raced. It looked as though Minka had popped out of her own fairy tale... like she should have her own amusement park or something.

He felt himself tense up as he reached for her gloved paw when she was on the last step. Don't roll into a ball... don't roll into a ball... Whatever you do... DON'T ROLL INTO A BALL!

Their paws brushed and held. Russell could feel his heart pounding out of his chest, ready to explode at any second! Minka gave him an enormous smile as he chuckled and bent down to kiss her gloved paw.

"My," she said, "Don't you look ravishing tonight!"
