One Day
Just an idea I had that wouldn't leave me alone. Hope you like it!
For Theo
The first time they met, it was the wrong place and the wrong time. They liked each other just fine, more than just fine really, but it wasn't meant to be, at least not then. In the back of his mind, he thought, 'I wouldn't mind marrying her one day,' but he didn't think much about it and continued on with his business.
The next time he saw her, she got a song stuck in his head. He sang it in the car, telling his brother that it was the song that he couldn't get out of his mind, not the girl. His brother didn't believe him, so his brother said, "You're going to marry her one day." He wrinkled his nose and protested, but his brother knew better.
The third time he saw her, she was helping them with a hunt. He almost lost her and when they were pouring the cement, she looked up at him and smiled. He smiled back and thought, 'Marrying her one day wouldn't be too bad.'
They took her home and she was angry about something in the past. She broke his heart by walking away. As he drove out of Nebraska, he thought to himself, 'I wish I could marry her one day.'
The fourth time he saw her, she was tied to a post. He cut her free before going after his brother. His brother shot him and he fell. She found him and pulled the bullet out of his arm. She was a butcher, but he didn't mind. When she was done, he thought, 'One day, I could marry her.' He promised he'd call, but he never did.
The next time they met, he was waving his arms to stop her from shooting him. He looked at her and, even though they were in the middle of chaos, he couldn't help but give her a little smile. When she and her mother drove away, he stood in the middle of the road and thought, 'I want to marry her one day.' He told her he'd call, and this time he did.
The next time they met, she rejected him, which only made him want her even more. As she walked back into the living room, he whispered, 'I'm going to marry her one day.' He watched her all night, praying she would change her mind, but she never did. Later, as he lied down to sleep, he pictured how beautiful she would look in a white dress.
When she was attacked, Dean's heart was shattered once again. He kissed her goodbye and, with his eyes, he said, 'I would've married you one day.' She nodded her head like she understood, and that crushed his heart even more, so he gave her a kiss.
After she died, he wept on his brother's shoulder. 'I was going to marry her one day,' he cried. His brother just nodded. Eventually he stopped crying.
Every year on her birthday, he goes to Carthage. He stands near the place she died and he drinks a bottle of whiskey. He occasionally spills some on the ground as though pouring a glass for her.
He sits on the ground and says, 'I wish I could've married you one day.'
