The muggleborn witch cast her charm again, not sure if she wanted to believe the result. Again the tip of her wand glowed blue. Hermione sighed and glanced over at the muggle pregnancy test on the counter. There was no denying it, she was pregnant. She knew when it had happened, too. After the final battle, she and Ron had been swept up in their newfound love and the thrill of being alive in a new world. They had secluded themselves away for two days and she hadn't had time to prepare any potions beforehand. Of course she had immediately brewed a short-term sterilisation potion when they got back, but if there had already been an implantation… she knew how Ron would react. He would want to get married straight away, to protect her, to protect himself from the wrath of his mother. And she wasn't sure.
Of course she loved Ron and wanted to be with him, she didn't know why it had taken them so long to figure that out in the first place. But she had missed a year of school, forgone her NEWTs, she hadn't had a chance to remove the memory charm from her parents. She wasn't going to be content raising children until she had her own life outside of all that. And she couldn't go back to Hogwarts pregnant.
Shakily she stood, vanished the rubbish and left the bathroom. "Ron?" she called. "Yeah" he yelled back from his bedroom. She climbed the stairs to the room. "Harry, go see Ginny, I need to talk to Ron."
"But that's dark magic!" Ron whispered loudly, not wanting his mother to hear them arguing. "It's not dark for any good reason Ron; muggles do it all the time. It's a responsible decision when you aren't prepared for children. We don't have an income, or even our NEWTs to get a decent job." Hermione sighed. Ron sputtered, "NEWTs aren't everything, I could do Quidditch or work with George, we'd get by."
"I don't want to get by Ron, I want to live and get a job I love, not settle for what's-"
"Settle? Am I 'settling' now? Don't you think I could provide for us? Are you too good for us?"
"No Ron, that's not what I meant at all… it's just…"
But Ron's face was red and his eyes thunderous, an expression Hermione knew all too well to mean that he wouldn't listen to anything further.
Hermione sank down onto Harry's bed and put her face in her hands. She and Ron had only just discovered what they meant to each other, she didn't want to jeopardise that. However she didn't want the life she could see ahead of her if she followed Ron's morals. Was she being selfish? She desperately needed to talk to her mum, but her mum was Monica Wilkins and in Australia. Hermione wasn't sure she could perform international apparition over such a distance at all, even if she knew an apparition spot well enough and knew Australian wizarding immigration laws. Not to mention if she left it too long, pregnant apparition carried a high risk of splinching.
She supposed she should go talk to professor McGonagall but she didn't know if the Weasley's opinion of such measures as she was considering was common among wizardkind and she couldn't bear to see McGonagall disappointed in her atop everything else. She barely registered Ron leaving the room, stuck in her own thoughts as she was. What could she do?
